Matt Damon might play Captain Kirk

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 21st 2006 3:32PM
Matt DamonOh, Trekkies Trekkers are going to have a lot to say about this, I'm sure.

J.J. Abrams says that's he wants to cast Damon as the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the new Star Trek movie he is putting together. And he even has the blessing of the original Captain James. T. Kirk, William Shatner.

I think this is a good idea, actually. Damon looks the part, and as the Bourne movies showed, he can do action. But please, please, please don't cast Ben Affleck as Spock. Nothing against Affleck, I just think that would be too much to take, like it's Space Will Hunting or something.

I really don't know if they should do another movie. I mean Enterprise didn't do well. Prequels are moderatly interesting at best. The major problem being is that you know the end of the story. There is no real suspense. That aside I agree that Matt Damon would suit the role of Captain Kirk. However, I also agree that he's a pretty 'low talking' actor and not very colorful. Shatner played Kirk like a stage actor, big bold and every scene sounded like Marlon Brando in a stret car named desire. I not entirely sure if damon has that shatner like quality. Its very difficult to play a caracter that is well established like Kirk. The only person I have seen to date that did a good enough job was Ewan McGregor. I think however it takes away from the performance cause your always looking for shatner's kirk. I think for the next movie they should spend the majority of the budget on doing a kick ass script and story instead of spending insane amounts on special effects.

A comment was made that Star Trek was not sacred. Star Trek as a show and a money maker maybe. but there is a human consciousness at play in the story lines of this show. We see our evolution in the show we see the divine spark of humanity. we don't just love the show , we need this show to help us along in our strivings for humanities fullest potential. so anything that will endanger or fog our human endeavers to see ourselves as we really are is wrong. No to this until someone sees the light.

ZThis has to be the worst Trek concept there has ever been. If Trek is not already almost dead, this is surely to be the blade that will kill it. This concept has been driving me insane since day one. I don't think it will do anything to the original Star Trek save take away from the greatness therein. Yes I am a dye hard trekkie, although I may have to add a clause excluding this one. I wish ENT would have continued. I never liked the war in it much, not cannon. I never liked DS9 War, it was a pitful way to try to save a dead series. Even the footage was reused in almost every battle. The last episode was a remake of footage from others (watch the ship fighting senes carefully). I was glad DS9 ended. I love TOS, TNG, VOY, and even ENT (despite the non-cannon war) but this...Why? This will surely make it so that Star Trek will die a sorrowful death of what could have been so much better. I think another character to play the part of some of the finest will just take away from the finest. The ideas of JJ Abrams are terrible. They are distasteful and I don't wanyt to see them played out (until something good comes or nothing at all)...

This "Abrams" person sounds like he don't know much about sci-fi, and in the wrong hands it really does not matter who Affleck plays...

I want all of you out to remember TERMINATOR 3, that was lame!!!

Hey Chrisfinn, I actually met that actor a month ago out at a bar. Really nice guy. I went over and introduced myself (but didnt want to be a total psycho fan) but he came over to my table a few minutes later and hung out with my group.
But scottish accent aside (he is scottish) I don't see him as Scotty.

Ben Afflec, I don't think so. but, if you watch Star Gate Atlantis, the guy who plays the doctor, would make a PERFECT Montgomery Scott. Watch it sometime & see if you agree. I wish I could think of that guys name. Must be oldtimers disease. Live Long & Prosper.

i think its a good choice

for Spock: Juaqin Phoenix
for McCoy: Gary Sinise

I dont understand all the 'dont make the movie' types. Trek isnt some sacred thing...its just another franchise.
