Rescue Me: Sparks
(S03E04) Go grab a thesaurus and look up fantastic. The dozen or so associated words - wonderful, spectacular, etc. None of them, not a single one, would do this episode justice. It's easily one of the top-five episodes of Rescue Me so far and that's saying a lot, especially if you saw the previews for next week.
The episode started with a bang. While responding to a medical emergency (an elderly African-American male with chest pains), the crew encounters a toppled school bus full of children. Naturally, they pull over and help get the kids out. Just in time too because the bus caught fire and part of it blew up. But nothing goes easy for these guys. As a result of ignoring the medical call, they got called out on the evening news by the Reverend Al Sharpton. His argument? They're racist because they helped all those white children instead of the guy who called 911. But there was an Egyptian kid on the bus too. Take that Al.
Jerry was fed up with what Al said, especially after the news had his name listed as Jerry O'Reilly. But the chief seems to be cranky a lot now anyway. His new job at the bar is taking its toll. He's only working as a barback hauling buckets of ice and cleaning up puke in the bathrooms. It pays crap, he works late. So naps around the firehouse are a necessity now. He just needs to learn to avoid passing out when Tommy is around. What happens if he has to quit and really can't pay for Jeanie's home anymore?
The Probie had one of the best scenes he's ever had I think. First, it started with him getting a blow-job from his roommate/boyfriend while he was watching some hockey. Then the two of them got into a fight over "who was the gayest." The Probie was certain that it wasn't him because he never gave; only received. It was hilarious. I think the point to be made here though is that these two are intellectual equals. They're both idiots... so who knows where this is going, other than down. Ha! I made a funny.
Franco is still seeing Alicia, but he's having reservations about her lavish lifestyle. She's loaded. But he seems like he really wants to adjust to it because Keela really has bonded with Alicia and the poor kid needs a mother. He brought up the fact that he took Keela back from her foster care family and never reported it though. This has never been discussed and I can only imagine that it was mentioned because it'll play a role. What if the state came back to take her away from Franco?
Lou... still getting worse, but then some hope. First he almost gets into a fight with Franco after he called him a stupid spic. So Franco told Lou he saw him the other night, drunk. That was strike one. Then Tommy tried to talk to Lou again and Lou blew him off. Strike two. Finally Lou got wrecked and headed over to some train tracks. He was contemplating suicide and got into a fight with a hobo about whose life was worse. The hobo gave in and said Lou's was. Strike three. So he ended up at Tommy's, spilled the beans on everything, and admitted that he needs help. This is great, I really like his storyline the best so far this season.
And finally we have Tommy. Three major things going on with him. First off was Sean and Maggie. Garrity finally told Tommy. A few punches later, Sean says he loves her and Tommy wails away again. But only because he knows Maggie is nuts and wants to keep Sean away. Maggie admits she's seeing five guys right now which gives Tommy more incentive to have Sean call it off. Tommy keeps playing middle man for these two, but sooner or later Sean will catch on. Unless... I wonder. What if Maggie was feeding Tommy some crappy lies because she can't bring herself to admit that she's in love with Sean?
Next up was Tommy's sperm. Nice thought huh? His father is still pushing for a grandson, so Tommy makes a donation at a sperm bank. He gets it on with Mrs. Turbudy beforehand, so his payload at the bank wasn't quite enough and he has to come back again. That's kind of embarrassing.
At the end of the episode, he met with Janet when Johnny wasn't around. She can't afford a lawyer and wants to try and figure out the divorce terms with Tommy. They talk and then out of nowhere he throws Janet to the couch, forcibly rips her shirt off, hikes her skirt up, and essentially rapes her. But it almost wasn't. Even though she threw a punch and was trying to push him off, she had this weird "I'm enjoying this immensely" look on her face the whole time. Oh yeah, she liked it. And she could have said something to Johnny when he got home. But she changed clothes and said nothing. Crazy, huh? It'll be even more nuts if she gets pregnant now. When Tommy left the house, he got his swagger back though. Haven't seen that in a while.
Now normally, I don't like to talk about the previews for the following week - but I need to here. First off, Marisa Tomei is guest starring. Outstanding. Who is she? Angela. Now we've heard this name before, but only a few times. She's Johnny's ex. You can connect the dots.
Then there's the whole Mrs. Turbudy thing. She gets busted by the cops for molesting students and come to find out, she was passing around chlamydia! That means Damien has it. Tommy does too. Which means... he gave it to Janet and she'll probably give it to Johnny. Nothing like some good ol' fashioned STDs to bring everyone together.
