NewsRadio: Smoking
(S01E03) Another funny episode, as a new no smoking ordinance in the office causes problems for Bill, who smokes like a chimney. And, because any problem for Bill ultimately becomes a problem for Dave, Dave has to give up drinking coffee, to help Bill with his addiction.Meanwhile, Lisa and Joe are nervous around each other because they saw each other at the movie theater. Lisa thinks it's because Joe knows about her and Dave, but it's actually something else...
At the morning meeting, Dave tells everyone about the new office policy of no smoking, but Bill points out that the policy states that with an office of 20 employees or more (and I guess all those extras just walking around in the background count as employees) has to designate a smoking area for the employees that smoke. It seems that Bill is the only employee in the office that smokes, even though Beth says she chews large wads of gum so she doesn't smoke. Dave sets up a smoking area next to the windows near the elevators. Now everytime Bill wants to smoke he has to do it there, with the windows open, which isn't easy when you're so many floors up and it's windy.
Of course, Bill wants to smoke more, so Dave says they'll go through it together: Dave will give up coffee (he's up to several pots a day) and Bill will give up cigarettes. But this just makes both of them sapped of their energy (Bill's newscasts become an endless monotone and Dave gets a massive headache), and in a funny scene they both freak out and scream at Matthew.
Dave gets his doctor to write him a prescription for the nicotine patch, and he gives it to Bill. But Bill puts several on, and an ambulance has to be called. After an overnight stay, Bill comes back, and he and Dave decide that life is better when you're addicted to tobacco and/or caffeine, so they go back to their own ways.
As a solution, Dave lets Bill smoke in the booth, filling the entire booth with cigarette smoke. Dave has Joe duct tape the booth so it doesn't get out. Of course, this is just for this episode, as we never see all this smoke in the booth in another episode.
Meanwhile, Lisa confronts Joe, who says that just because he was with a gay guy at the movies doens't mean he's gay. Lisa is relieved that this is what Joe was talking abouty, so her affair with Dave is safe.
