NewsRadio: Smoking

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 24th 2006 6:56PM
Phil Hartman(S01E03) Another funny episode, as a new no smoking ordinance in the office causes problems for Bill, who smokes like a chimney. And, because any problem for Bill ultimately becomes a problem for Dave, Dave has to give up drinking coffee, to help Bill with his addiction.

Meanwhile, Lisa and Joe are nervous around each other because they saw each other at the movie theater. Lisa thinks it's because Joe knows about her and Dave, but it's actually something else...

At the morning meeting, Dave tells everyone about the new office policy of no smoking, but Bill points out that the policy states that with an office of 20 employees or more (and I guess all those extras just walking around in the background count as employees) has to designate a smoking area for the employees that smoke. It seems that Bill is the only employee in the office that smokes, even though Beth says she chews large wads of gum so she doesn't smoke. Dave sets up a smoking area next to the windows near the elevators. Now everytime Bill wants to smoke he has to do it there, with the windows open, which isn't easy when you're so many floors up and it's windy.

Of course, Bill wants to smoke more, so Dave says they'll go through it together: Dave will give up coffee (he's up to several pots a day) and Bill will give up cigarettes. But this just makes both of them sapped of their energy (Bill's newscasts become an endless monotone and Dave gets a massive headache), and in a funny scene they both freak out and scream at Matthew.

Dave gets his doctor to write him a prescription for the nicotine patch, and he gives it to Bill. But Bill puts several on, and an ambulance has to be called. After an overnight stay, Bill comes back, and he and Dave decide that life is better when you're addicted to tobacco and/or caffeine, so they go back to their own ways.

As a solution, Dave lets Bill smoke in the booth, filling the entire booth with cigarette smoke. Dave has Joe duct tape the booth so it doesn't get out. Of course, this is just for this episode, as we never see all this smoke in the booth in another episode.

Meanwhile, Lisa confronts Joe, who says that just because he was with a gay guy at the movies doens't mean he's gay. Lisa is relieved that this is what Joe was talking abouty, so her affair with Dave is safe.

Quotes:

"How about a mobile ten foot area around me?" - Bill, to Dave, about where the new smoking area should be.

"How is that supposed to help me? You should have to give up something of equal difficulty, like going to the bathroom." - Bill, to Dave, who says he'll give up coffee if Bill gives up smoking.

"I've been better. I coughed up something this morning that looked like escargot, but I guess that's a good sign." - Bill, to Dave, about how he's doing not smoking.

"I don't think he's a very good doctor." - Dave, after telling everyone that he got the nicotine patch from his doctor, even though he doesn't smoke.

"It smells like an ashtray when I pee. Can you help me with that?" - Bill, to Dave, after wearing too many nicotine patches.

"Why don't you just use your gum?" - Dave, to Beth, who joked that she wanted him to ask his doctor for a diaphragm for her.

"Yeah, well, thanks Fonzie. I think the caps lock did go off just before the screen went blank." - Dave, to Joe, who "fixed" Dave's laptop caps lock problem by hitting it.

"You tell anyone about Steel Magnolias, I'll kill you. It would take a robot not to cry at that movie." - Bill, about his crying at Steel Magnolias at 3am.

The image of Bill is the smoke filled booth is a classic.

Also, you missed one of my favorite lines from this one where Dave says he has no idea what it is caffeine does for you, but he's pretty sure without it your head will implode.

Just an awesome episode. That it was only the 3rd ep ever shows how good this show was right off the bat, unlike a ton of sitcoms that took a while to hit their stride.

That "not a very good doctor" line was a great reference to one of Foley's signature Kids in the Hall characters, the bad doctor.

I loved NewsRadio. I hope you do a review of of my favorite episodes (I don't know the name of it), where Bill is trying to do a sports promo and Dave has a little fun with the editing, basically telling Bill it's too long. So while working with the sound editor, they come up with this edit:
I'm Bill McNeal. I like boys. I smoke crack!

I was rolling when I heard that!

my favorite line is when Bill describes how he was wearing many patches like a belt.
