Sports Night: Mary Pat Shelby

Sabrina Lloyd(S01E05) I mentioned in another review that not many people mix comedy and drama as well as Aaron Sorkin does, and this is another good example. On another show, it would have been handled really badly (or not attempted at all).

CSC gets a big scoop when football player Christian Patrick agrees to be interviewed in the studio. Maybe after this interview, CSC won't be the number three network anymore...

Meanwhile, Dan is seriously thinking about growing a goatee, even though the entire staff advises him not to.

Dana sends Natalie to the Meadowlands to do a pre-interview with Christian Patrick. Patrick has a history of violence (he punched his girlfriend in the face and she went down a flight of stairs). Dana has agreed to not mention that in the interview, much to the dismay of Dan and Casey. Especially Casey, who thinks she rolled over and surrendered to their demands.

Natalie comes back from the interview acting a little jumpy and with a sprained wrist. In the meeting, Isaac announces that a new news story is breaking, that Patrick exposed himself to a woman in the locker room and also hurt her arm. Jeremy realizes it was Natalie.

Dana makes another deal when Patrick comes to the studio for the interview: they won't mention the incident with Natalie if they can talk about Mary Pat Shelby, the girlfriend Patrick punched in the face. But is she compromising her principles just for ratings?

Dana thinks about this and decides you can't do it. She runs through the station to get to the studio, and tells everyone the interview is off. She's not going to let a jerk like Patrick get any airtime on CSC.

In the last scene, Natalie confronts Patrick in the stairwell. He tries to sweet talk her, but she tells him that she was only doing her job, and tomorrow she's going to the police to tell them what happened.

"I'll give you a hundred dollars if you don't start naming them." - Casey, to Dan, who says a lot of famous people had goatees.

"I thought you were taking a break from moral accountability?" - Casey, to Dan, after he told Dana that she shouldn't use a certain argument to rationalize interviewing Patrick after the assault.

"It hasn't been my experience that you need to be told that." - Dan, to Natalie, about telling her to "be strong."

"Yeah, but that's all gonna change when I grow a goatee." - Dan, to Patrick's agent, who insulted CSC by calling it a "fourth rate network."

I know what you're talking about Jamie, I gave up watching Numbers when they got rid of her. Though SN was funny enough without her looks.

Its shows like this episode that made it hard for ABC to market the show. Its too bad. Sports Night was amazing. Some of the best writing ever, esspecially on a half hour show.

I'd forgotten just how cute sabrina Lloyd is. She was about the only reason to watch Sliders, much less sportsnight.
