CNN playing joke on viewers

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 3rd 2006 3:30PM

I mean this has to be a late (or very early) April Fool's Day joke, right? They can't be doing this tonight, can they?

Tonight, CNN is rerunning, again, the Larry King Live interview with Star Jones. This is at least the fourth time they've run it in the past 6 or 7 days. I think it might even be more.

What is going on? Seriously, am I going to have to start watching Hannity and Colmes at 9 every night? And I don't care if it is the Fourth of July and King is probably off tonight, there's no excuse why CNN should run this yet again. They got a lot of bad press for running this so much, and it would be so easy to just decide not to run it again, get some credibility back. But I guess the powers that be don't have that judgement cell in their head.

Oh, and they are going to run the interview again, at 3am tomorrow morning.

Joel, I get where you coming from, and realize I am not on the most solid of ground in this discussion. I'm just pointing out that going after CNN for doing the exact same thing TVSquad is doing is a little silly. I see all those View threads in the most commented pile every day. Just like CNN sees the ratings numbers for this episode. In the end though, I struggle to find fault with making fun of Star, Barbara, Rosie, CNN, Larry King, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Jeez, cute little Elisabeth had to go all right wing nutter on us. I was hoping for the other path, the one paved with checks from Hugh Hefner. :D

And Bob, I see the difference. I was trying to put forth the idea that there is a lot of uncovered television out there, remaining so as this story is obsessed over.

To mangle an old axiom: If it's sleaze, it leads.

maybe because:

STAR JONES ATTRACTS BIG RATINGS FOR LARRY KING
Star Jones's appearing on CNN's Larry King Live last Thursday Spike drew more than 3 million viewers, three times King's average for the season. The huge number of viewers who tuned in to hear the fired The View panelist also put him ahead of Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes, a rare occurrence. Meanwhile it was announced that singer-actress Brandy will guest host The View on Wednesday and Friday this week and that All My Children's Susan Lucci has also been signed as a fill-in.

Doc: We cover television. CNN *is* television.

You've got a point, Doc, but it's kind of a no-win situation for us. If we *didn't* cover the Star story, we'd be accused of not doing our jobs. But we cover it too much, we're accused of being obsessed with the story. And anyway, most of our coverage has involved making fun of Star, Barbara, Rosie, CNN, Larry King, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. How bad can that be?

This leaves me thinking about black pots and kettles. How many freaking Star Jones posts has TVSquad had? It's The View for crying out loud. There are a number of summer shows that go unmentioned, yet the ins and outs about Star, Barbara, Rosie, and who may or may not be joining gets covered exhaustively. I suggest you lead by example and just drop the whole mess here. Maybe CNN and the rest will wake up and follow suit.
