The Canadian origins of Ed the Sock
Back in June, when Keith McDuffee talked about G4's Midnight Spank, he mentioned Ed the Sock's Night Party as part of that new block of late-night shows. Night Party stars Ed the Sock, a grumpy cigar-chomping, insult-hurling puppet that was the alleged precursor to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Ed spends his show interviewing (or insulting, depending on your opinion) and making the moves on the many buxom ladies that appear weekly in and out of the hot tub.
Ed's career began in Toronto back in the 1990's as a VJ on Canada's video music channel MuchMusic. In addition to Night Party he hosted such shows as Formage, an annual program highlighting the cheapest music videos of the year. Night Party moved to the local CityTV channel and, eventually, was syndicated all across Canada. While the show is popular in our neighbor to the north it isn't without controversy. For example, several provinces took the show off of the air after an episode aired in which Ed was supposedly having sex with a Playboy playmate. This is surprising considering there are a number of commercial stations in Canada that show un-cut soft porn movies on a regular basis.
Last year Ed was joined by Liana K, the first female co-host on Night Party. Actually, Ed has known Liana for many years as she has been executive producer for all of the Sock's projects, and is currently married to Steven Kerzner, the creator and puppet-master for Ed. More information on Ed and Liana can be found at their website.
