How do you say 'No soup for you' in German?

by Anna Johns, posted Jul 13th 2006 5:58PM
soupman restaurant logoThe New York City chef who inspired the infamous Soup Nazi character on Seinfeld is expanding his restaurant worldwide. Al Yeganeh plans to open up 50 SoupMan franchises in Britain next year, with openings in Germany, Italy and Japan to follow. His original restaurant, Soup Kitchen International in Manhattan, is what inspired the Soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld. Just like at the American restaurant chain (there are 20), employees will follow Yeganeh's strict rules. Customers must have their money ready and move to the left after ordering or they can be denied service (the rules are on the restaurant website). The employees do not yell, "No Soup For You", however. It's amazing to me that he's still making money on the venture, considering the episode aired in 1995.

Anybody ever eaten at a SoupMan restaurant? How's the mulligatawny?

One of these is set to open in the NJ town where I live. I'm curious about the soup, but can do without the "Soup Nazi" ordering procedure. No soup is worth that.

Not only is the original store in the west 50s still around, there's now a branch up in Morningside Heights, near the Columbia University campus. The Soup Man's soups rock HARD. Never had the mulligatawny, but I've never tried one that wasn't spectacular.

Been there at the end of May, lobster bisque is fantastic! And nowadays, after you get your soup, you're allowed to take bread and fruit from a designated basket. Beats standing in the humongous line for the opening of the new apple store!

I heard that the one in NYC has closed down. I didn't look for it when I was there a few months ago, though, so I could be wrong.

Yeah, I ate there when I was in NYC for work about 5 years ago. I saw someone get denied service, too, so it was mega-authentic. LOL

Talk about striking while the iron is ice cold.
