The Amazing Screw-On Head brings the funny

Amazing Screw-On HeadI've been on a comic-book kick lately, waiting for the next issue of Y: The Last Man (good stuff), so I checked out the online premiere of Sci-Fi's The Amazing Screw-On Head. The 22-minute pilot episode features the voice talents of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce, Patton Oswalt, and Molly Shannon.

The combination of comedy and adventure reminds me of The Venture Bros., but while VB is an acquired taste for some, Screw-On Head seems like it could easily appeal to a larger audience. A lot of the story is taken straight from the comic, but since it was a one-shot (a stand-alone story) there have been a few well-done changes to allow the show room to grow to a full series. I'd love to see this on a regular basis! I definitely recommend it... Watch the pilot now, or read a little more about the comic and then watch it (seriously, watch it). Remember to fill out the survey after you see it so that SciFi can decide whether or not to pursue the series.

Emperor Zombie: Patience, darling? Do I have the permission to let Head stake you if it means world domination?
Patience, his vampiress: Yes, my love! [whispers to Head] ... Nooooo.

I liked it a lot. "Don't put your damage on me, pal!" made me laugh out loud.

I liked it so much I made water in my pantaloons!

My only gripe was with Molly Shannon, who appeared to have recorded her lines with a pair of white cotton athletic socks in her mouth. Not the little "footie" socks, either, but the ones that go clear up over the calf.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be a troll. I must have been in a bad mood when I watched it. On the surface I should like it. I love DHP, Molly Shannon and Paul Giamatti. I liked the Hellboy movie. I am going to give it another try in a while.

Oh Jay, stop being a troll. Lots of the dialogue in this episode was witty. I found it quite charming and would watch a regular series.

That was spectacularly awful. It wasn't funny at all, the jokes felt forced. The animation was horrid. Music was terrible. The voice work was fine, but they couldn't get past the material. It was like a bad episode of Buffy without the witty dialogue.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved VB as soon as I saw it. However, it took some of my friends more than one episode before they really got into it.

And yeah, the voice work in this was fantastic. Paul Giamatti and David Hyde Pierce were my favorites.

While I'm not sure I agree with Venture Brothers being that much of an aquired taste that was an amazingly well-done pilot. Mignolia's style and writing translated amazingly well and the great voice work really made it something special to watch.

I really hope this gets picked up.
