The Closer: Out of Focus

(S02E06) The opening sequences of this show are getting awfully clever, aren't they? This time, it looks as though Brenda and Chief Pope are meeting at a hotel for an illicit affair. Given the sexual tension between the two, their past relationship in Atlanta, and Pope's recent advances toward Brenda, it's entirely plausible that the two are shacking up. Just not yet.
Of course, the hotel room turns out to be a crime scene. A member of the paparazzi is dead. He took a spill from the balcony in a high rise hotel room. The hotel manager is a bit of a pill but Brenda sweet talks him with her traditional "Thank You".
On a sidenote: Lt. Provenza is inexplicably annoyed with paparazzi, or "paparazzo" as he calls the individual, dead photographer. He also calls the guy "Humpty Dumpty". And he names the dummies that they throw out of the hotel after each of his ex-wives. Classic. This guy is getting all the good one-liners this season. Lt. Tao is getting some great character development this season. He's a bit of a nerdy, do-gooder who just wants Brenda's approval. He falls all over himself to do Brenda's bidding and gets positively giddy when has information that is helpful to her.
The investigation into the photographer's death leads Brenda down a twisted path of suspects that include a crazed fan named Elvis who camps 250 feet outside celebrity Whit Coleman's house and a money-grubbing hotel clerk. Brenda gets stonewalled by Coleman's lawyer but she ends up getting his bodyguard to crack. It turns out Coleman is having an affair... with a man (the reaction from the other detectives was hilarious). The bodyguard is heartbroken over the affair because he loves Whit too. But that still doesn't lead her to a suspect.
It ended up being a message on her boyfriend, Fritz's, answering machine that helped her crack the case. Brenda realizes that the photographer's ex-wife, Annie, is the one who pushed him over the balcony. She gets the woman to admit to the murder by making her think that Brenda believes that it's an accident. Then she points out that the woman stomped on her ex-husband's hand as he hung from the balcony and the woman flips out. It turns out she killed him out of jealousy over his obsession with celebrities.
The episode ends with a cliffhanger: Chief Pope asks Brenda out to dinner and the elevator doors close on the camera before we hear her answer.
