Don't forget! Life on Mars now airing on BBC America

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 25th 2006 3:36PM

Life on MarsJust a reminder that the acclaimed British series Life on Mars - which Martin has been reviewing here - is now being shown on BBC America. It airs Monday nights at 10pm, as well as other times during the week.

I caught the first episode last night, and I have to say it's a terrific show. The premsie: a Manchester detective chasing a serial killer in 2006. His co-worker/girlfriend Maya is kidnapped by the killer, and while he's investigating it, he gets hit by a car and wakes up...in 1973 Manchester! Is he dreaming this in a coma? Is he really back in 1973? Can going back in time help him solve the crime?

I didn't think the premise would hold up, but it does, and it's really intriguing. Catch it.

the UK show has a run time of just over 55 minutes, so i'm assuming to fit it into the US hour long broadcast window some editing is going to have to be done, 7 to 10 minutes, depending on how many commercial minutes are in the hour, which is to bad as the show deserves to be seen in it's original form.

I watched a couple of these, and although the production value is very good, the story OK, the acting - not so much.

And as much as I enjoy the music, which is clearly the centerpiece of the series, the director works it too hard to carry the show - it eclipses the story.

I checked the BBC America site and it does reair on Sunday night at 9pm for anyone who missed it.

As a side note, while on the BBC America site I saw that Love Soup is premiering Love Soup next Tuesday at 10pm. It looks really good.

That's not nitpicky at all John. My mistake. I'll correct it. Thanks for the correction.

Terribly nitpicky of me, but I feel compelled to point out that Life On Mars is NOT set in London; it was set in (and filmed in) my hometown Manchester.

I had the opportunity to watch this series earlier this year. I think it's great and cannot wait to see how the US audience embraces it. I heard somewhere that there might be a US remake of Life on Mars in the works. I don't know if that would stand just as well as say the Office US version.

I saw it last night and was pleasantly surprised. I saw the promos and didn't think much of it, but then lately I've been reading/hearing good stuff about it, so I tuned it... and yeah, worth it.

I was intrigued by the first promos I'd seen, but BBC-American over-promoted it to such an extent that I almost--almost!--refused to watch it out of protest. But I caved, and I'm glad. It was brilliant. Simm, the protagonist, was simply terrific. They manage to do justice both to the cop-show aspect (especially the difference between police work/attitudes over the 30-year span) and to the "how did I get here?" aspect. I've been waiting all day for you guys to review it!
