The Daily Show: July 24, 2006

The Daily Show"Crisis in Israfghyianonanaq": So, Condoleezza Rice paid a not-so-surprise visit to Lebanon. Jon said that Rice would have paid a visit earlier if it wasn't for some motherfucking snakes on her motherfucking plane. Oh, hell yes. Snakes on a Plane jokes will never, ever die... I have a feeling I'll take this back once the film actually comes out.

"The 'L' Country": Senior Mideast Correspondent Ed Helms elaborated on Lebanon's situation. His joke about the Hezbollah militiamen handing out peanut brittle cans (not full of plastic snakes, but bombs) was a bit predictable, but it still made me laugh. And his Lebanese/sarcastic voice was hilarious. He sounded a bit like a flamboyant hairdresser I once met. Another fan said that he sounded more like Snagglepuss. Haha, so true.

Whoa-ho-ho-ho. Extremely early interview. The show hadn't even hit the halfway point when they brought out the night's guest, Senator John McCain. Senator McCain did a lot of friendly jokes (bought the fans' trust when he said that he missed the old TDS couch) and it really showed that Jon appreciated his presence. However, when Jon tried getting some straight talk out of McCain, the Senator started trying to skirt the issue (throwing around McCain-Stewart '08 jokes). I've liked McCain for a long time, but I kind of lost a bit of my admiration once he started all that Bush brown-nosing. I could kind of sense that Jon felt the same way and was trying to push McCain into speaking a bit more openly about his political views. Not much luck, although there were a few humorous moments when McCain visibly struggled to appeal to Jon without pissing off his Capitol Hill buddies.

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert could have near-rivaled McCain's endurance as a POW... Kind of. I loved two things... Jon and Stephen almost broke into giggles; Stephen's 1984 reference ("Do it to Julia!"). Moment of Zen: Miss Israel and Miss Lebanon brought some wicked hotness to Miss Universe 2006.

I love the Snakes on a Plane joke, may they never die.
I didn't like Ed Helms bit, I don't know why, but the "sarcasm voice" didn't click with me.

Man, I was all excited about John McCain coming on the show and all that showed up was the same old Republican talk. Though his comments on net neutrality were great.

The Jon / Stephen moment was absolutely great. Stephen being so dramatic about skim milk, Jon almost immedeately having to raise the papers to cover his laughter, I loved it.

My disappointment with McCain is a lot older than yours, Annie, so I was already expecting him to play up his affability and dodge any awkward questions. But I have to say he won my grudging respect (as well as a really loud laugh) when, in response to Jon's question about whether it wouldn't be possible to pull Senator Ted Stevens aside and let him know that the Internet isn't actually a series of tubes, McCain milked the pause with some great reactions and then perfectly delivered the line, "I wouldn't want to disillusion him."
