Rock Star: Supernova: Week 4 Performances

(S02E07) Tonight began with a little sample of the Supernova music. The aspiring rock stars nod appreciatively. Maybe the blistering Southern California heat has made me cranky but the music didn't make me giddy with anticipation. If anything it was a lot less intense than I had imagined it would be. As Gilby said, they aren't looking to do heavy metal. Instead it sounds more like Velvet Revolver. But it's hard to critique songs that aren't fully formed yet so let's get right to the performances. It was a bit of a rough week in my opinion.

Lukas, Bittersweet Symphony -- Wow, what a way to screw up a beautiful song. His makeup and his singing were just abysmally messy tonight in my opinion. And I'm the girl who dotes on the guy. The band dug it though.

Zayra, Call Me - -This girly sure loves spandex, the outfit was hot but the singing was so not. And she's so darn cocky about her performances. Humility, my dear, humility.

Dana, About A Girl -- I'm not so sure it was a wise idea for her to bring out the acoustic guitar but she is just so much better than she was just a few weeks ago. She's like a really talented high school girl.

Patrice, Remedy -- Just average, not good, not bad, she can sing but there's no edge here. I feel like I've seen her fronting some generic band in some small town bar before.

Toby, White Wedding -- I still think he's just too pretty for this band but he did a good job doing a Billy Idol-style growl and prowl.

Magni, Heroes -- Great voice but the performance is a bit pallid with less of the passion he showed last week.

Ryan, I, Alone -- He just can't loosen up. The other contestants who are watching in the gallery are more into the song than he is. He peps it up at the end but it is so deliberate.

Jill, Brown Sugar -- Gilby plays with her and she grinds on him a bit which he doesn't seem to enjoy (the fool). Something about her outfit forced her to lead with her crotch. I blame the shoes. She was in good voice though.

Phil, One Headlight -- Poor wobble-headed Phil, the singing is okay but overall he's just not ready to front a band, he seems relatively charisma-free most days.

Dilana, Time After Time -- She's got such a whisky voice, I love that she mixes up her act each week showing that she has great versatility. Yeah, she's growing on me.

Josh, No Rain -- Mr. smiley is great at granola rock like this but he's really not right for Supernova. Maybe Train needs a backup front man.

Storm, Anything, Anything -- I love this song but she makes it a little too poppy for my taste. And is it my imagination or did she totally change the words? It felt like punk done as a high school musical.

I don't think they showed the bottom three this time. And Tommy, please pull up your pants. Network TV is not ready for the monster to be unleashed.
