ABC cancels The One after only two weeks

The OneABC had an idea for a revolutionary new reality show, in which young talents could try their hand at becoming America's next hottest star... while living together under one roof! It was unlike anything else on TV. Except all those seasons of Making the Band. And America's Next Top Model. And Last Comic Standing. Alright, maybe it wasn't so revolutionary.

So maybe I'm being a little too harsh... and even a bit unfair because I've never actually seen ABC's The One before. Then again, it's not like I had many opportunities too... nor will I have anymore. That's right, after only two weeks of extremely low ratings, ABC has decided to cancel the show. Ouch. There have been no announcements as to what will take up the time slot for the rest of the season.

In a way, I kind of feel bad for the contestants on the program. I'm sure most (if not all) of them felt that this would be their big break for a record deal. Although not everyone can win the top prize, exposure to the business is always nice... The poor kids barely got a chance to showcase themselves. Tough biz.

The One was a painful show to watch. The performances for the most part had an odd grating effect for some reason. And the judges were, to be honest, obnoxious and very condescending. Their whole manner of judging was the equivalent of Paris Hilton doing Shakespeare, ( one of his plays, not the man ). I, too, feel sorry for the contestants. I know I would be crushed. But the show, from the host to the judges to the production, had an overall cheap look to it. I watched the first night and figured it wasn't going to catch on. But I wouldn't have predicted ABC yanking it entirely. I did gather enough interest to keep switching over to see bits of the results shows. But you know what they say about train wrecks-- gotta look.

Yeah, the premise has been exhausted all over the world. I was being sarcastic in the first part of my post.

Actually Annie, "The One" isn't original in the slightest. The spanish language network Azteca America has a show currently in its fifth season called "La Academia" that has the contestants live and practice together. The performances in front of the judges usually become production numbers with dancers in wild costumes.
