Idol producers wanted Fantasia to quit

Fantasia BarrinoSo did a lot of people. Ba-DAH-boom! Thank you very much, I'm here all week! Try the veal!

Seriously though, American Idol producers tried to force Fantasia Barrino to quit the show, and this was after she made it to the finals. Seems that Idol was concerned that revelations that Barrino had a child in her early teens and the fact that she was a high school dropout that had literacy problems. But Fantasia wouldn't quit, and the rest is history.

I'm surprised a show like American Idol would want to force out someone who was a high school drop out, because it sounds like the perfect "rags to riches, come back against all odds" type of story they'd eat up. The other part, having a child as an unwed mother, I guess is more understandable (Idol seems to have a problem with "morals" and has kicked off several contestants), though I don't think that should disqualify anyone either. Besides, didn't they know about all this stuff before she made it to the finals?

Ahh, the irony. This from the same show that, each and every season, very willingly showcases each and every idiot that decides to curse out the camera and everyone in the building after they lose - and their mothers who do the same.

I'll tell you what I'd enjoy seeing on television. Just 20 minutes of several high-powered tv execs attempting to defend their companies' morals and character - and consequently being thrashed on air, live, because of their constant hypocrisy.

Now that's something worth paying for.

Fantasia isn't several contestants. She was highly favored by Simon Cowell from the start. In addition to the observations I already shared, Clive Davis came on the show and said he'd hire her if he had heard her singing in a basement! There have been no hard facts forthcoming to support that TPTB tried to force her to quit and as the writer said, why would they? They needed Fantasia and she had done nothing to disqualify herself, even being forthright about having a child.

I find this very believable, especially since several contestants in previous season had been unceremoniously shown the door before her and we still haven't heard the real story behind Mario Vasquez's departure. Thinking back I remeber one time early in the season while Fantasia was recieving the judges critiques that Simon said something like she brought danger to the show and "Thank God, she was still there" and I remeber thinking that she had yet to be anywhere near the bottom 3 so of course she was still "there" where else would she be. Maybe this is what he was talking about.

I'm not surprised. At it's core, Fox is ultra-conservative, and they probably did have concerns over her share of the early votes. Fox411 reported back then that producers knew she would win around the top 7 or 8. I'm glad to see that Fantasia succeeded in the end.

Whaaaat? I don't buy that and it sure won't spoil it for me when her story airs on Lifetime next month. First of all, TPTB don't care about people-pleasing. They care about high ratings and FOX-TVs share was high, no doubt bolstered by 'tasia's presence. Second, well into the finals, Simon Cowell said were it not for her he would be absolutely bored that season. Third, Ryan Seacrest increasingly gave her center stage by prompting her to speak during the show's tapings. While haters raged with obsessed fervor, they came to realize Fantasia was a formidable contestant with a growing fanbase that had her back. No AI champion has had more finale' votes or won AI by a wider margin. The increasing spontaneous bursts of applause after she performed weekly speaks for itself.

No way did American Idol want Fantasia to quit the show! She was the show in Season Three!

I am very happy to hear that her sophomore CD will be more "old school"...Gospel, blues, jazz; this is her element.

But please somebody, ask her to stop squealing because it is not as appealing as her singing. The girl can "sang"!

Agree with Solar. Besides, I'm pretty sure quite a few of people who watch American Idol have way more "shameful" skeletons in their closets.

I think we should hold off judgement as to whether the producers tried to make fantasia quit until AFTER we see the movie. This info that you are reporting came from a movie review by the new york post from a person who has already seen the movie.

The only thing, I wish the review had left this part out (it is sort of spoiler) or, gone into more detail. However, since it was a great movie review, my guess is that it is very true and likely happened right at the top 12. Idol had received tons of complaints about fantasia and her "status" of being a high school drop and single mother, to make the public happy they likely did try to "force" her out, afterall, making ONE person leave the show would be a heck of a lot easier then trying to silence all the complainers. I am so happy that she did NOT quit.

But again, reserve judgement as to whether you believe it or not UNTIL you see the movie. However, I do believe it because of the complaints this girl had against her. Idol was just trying to make the "public" happy by trying to get her to leave, but Fantasia wasn't having it.
