Now it's Barbara vs. Elisabeth on The View - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 2nd 2006 4:23PM

Elisabeth HasselbeckDoes a day go by on The View where they don't talk about something controversial? Where an argument doesn't occur? Where somebody doesn't freak out?

YouTube has the latest meltdown, from today, when Elisabeth Hasselbeck gets into an argument with Joy Behar about the 72 hour pill and pregnancy and rape and the sanctity of life. Then Barbara Walters gets into it, and displays that phony "voice of reason" tone that she so often has.

It honestly looks like Hasselbeck is going to walk off the set, or at the very least start crying or pouting. Guest host Lisa Loeb just looks really, really uncomfortable and is probably thinking, "I should have gone to Regis and Kelly."

Video after the jump...

I enjoy The View because it offers different - ahem - views! I think Elisabeth is in a tough position because she is the only host on the show that is a conservative traditionalist. I think it's great to hear that point of view. Expressing it as passionately and emphatically as Elisabeth did makes for great television!

So what if they talk over themselves. That's what women do! It's entertaining and fun. I have know problem following the conversations.

Now specific to this situation, Barbara posed the scenario regarding victims of rape directly to Elisabeth. She should, then, get the opportunity to respond to the question. Instead, she was interrupted by Joy first and then Lisa. She responded to Joy but wanted to finish her thought before Lisa chimed back in. Being that her view is in the minority, she really should have been given full opportunity to finish her thought. She didn't get worked up until after she was interrupted by Joy a second time. As articulate and emphatic as viewers (and Joy) know her to be, her passionate response does not surprise me. Barbara's intervention, on the otherhand, did.

Barbara lacked tack when she jumped in. She was very condescending and disrespectful to her co-host. Elisabeth didn't say anything disrespectful but was labeled as irrational and crazy by her boss, on-air. I think that was inappropriate. It showed a lack of support for the show and goes against the premise of the show (that Barbara created). Perhaps Barbara really meant it when she said, in the show's original opening - that they have many different views, "maybe a little too different."

Elisabeth is so annoying. She has not learned that no matter how much "passion" you have about your views you have to respect that someone else may feel equal about their view. She rants on and on repeating her view as though repeating her view several times and being the last one to express herself will make the opposing view disappear! I think Lizzy needs to grow up a bit as she is a mother now and realize that her adolescent behavior is so annoying and very yesterday! Yes she has a right to her opinion however wrong she may be.

It's too bad Barbara Walters didn't retire from The View at the same time she retired from 20/20. She reminds you of the nun in Sunday school disciplining a child for having a strong opinion on something. It should be interesting to see what she'll do to Rosie when she arrives....I'm sure the honeymoon of Rosie joining the show won't last for long

From a broadcasting point of view, this show is very annoying when the women talk over each other. However, when one sees fit to yell over the others, that's unacceptable. BW had every right to reign in Elisabeth.

I've often thought that Elizabeth is auditioning for her own show on Fox.
She is self-richeous and belligerent. The other View co-hosts have learned to state their views in a way that invites others in, and/or with humor. Hasslebeck is all about her. She creates dissention.

So, am I to understand that because Elisabeth is conservative, she has no place on network TV? Because that's just idiotic. You can't get a well-rounded world focus just watching/listening to one point of view. I agree with Angie a lot on this one.

What "special circumstances" is Elisabeth talking about? Since the scenario Joy laid out seemed to be quite unsettling (reality) already as it is.

Barbara stopped her because Elisabeth (usually spelled with a Z) was losing it. I wonder if she uses or ever has used the pill because she pretty much described how the pill works. There is a huge far right movement to get rid of the pill. Would Elisabeth consider all women who use the pill murderers? Huh, tell us Elisabeth, what do you think about the pill?
I hear enough of that conservative crap on talk radio. She needs to get a job at Fox. Let her have a meltdown there. Yes she has a conservative bent and yes, she is no good at her job. She'll be no match for Rosie

> I'm certain that Bob is inferring that Lisa Loeb is thinking about Regis & Kelly.

My mistake, but it doesn't change the fact that the grammar is wrong.

Babs stopped Survivor Girl because she didn't agree with her opinion. BW chose to dress SG down for the way she presented her opinion because, in her own words she, "...rarely gives her own opinion." Brilliant strategy, but disingenuous.
