The contestants were blindfolded in order to heighten their other senses. Sadly, the next event was the Ginsu Knife Can Cutting Challenge and a bloodbath ensued.

Truly great chefs go through a process of losing their site to hone their other senses, eventually forming "tastedar" where they can see the world around them via their hightened sense of taste.
