Press Kits Unwrapped: FOX's Vanished

by Keith McDuffee, posted Aug 10th 2006 2:55PM
fox vanished press kitWith all the new shows starting up within the next couple of months, the press kits have started to arrive at TV Squad HQ. I've been pretty surprised at how elaborate some of these packets can get. Take, for example, the press packet for Weeds. It came complete with a nice little gardening bag (with Weeds logo), a gardening trowel, rake, two different gardening shears and some crazy super plant growth fertilizer. I plan to use them on my, er, parsley. Yeah.

The press packet for FOX's new show Vanished came in the other day, and it's another doozy. I think we'll have to hand out press kit awards every year if they keep this sort of thing up. So, what's in the press kit? Read on for some shots.

Inside the envelope (first, smaller image in this post) was just this official looking binder, complete with 'Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigations' logo on it. If the package envelope hadn't been so obvious, I'd really be wondering what the hell I was getting into right about now.

Here's the contents of the binder. Still pretty official looking, isn't it? Opening the folder shows the following items:

Now this is pretty neat. It looks like a real case file! Mysterious phone number clipped to the side of the folder, newspaper clippings, print outs, photos, a business card -- Pretty elaborate. First item up, the newspaper clipping:

It's even ripped as though someone didn't have scissors nearby, and on authentic newspaper-like paper. Both sides are printed on with clues regarding the case at hand.

These items were paperclipped together. An annotated map, some captioned photos and some weird card that says 'Nathan' on it (St. Nathan?) On the back of that card is another clue, but I don't want to give that away, at least just yet.

vanished
A printout of a news website featuring more clues about the case.

vanished
Nothing all that special about this I think. Nothing on the back. This is it.

vanished
Sorry for the crappy shot of this. It's a business card for the reporter on the show, Judy Nash (Rebecca Gayheart). What, no phone number?

The other neat aspect of this kit is, judging by some of the other accompanying documents, these are actual clues that could be used to help one follow more closely along with the case. I can't give you details on what exactly is there to pick through, but maybe more of it will become obvious once the show airs.

Is there a way for us to receive press kits? Can we contact the network, or be put on a mailing list? How does it work?

You might be able to ebay these kits someday if the actors on the shows become big or the show really takes off.
