The Five: Keith's fall picks

by Keith McDuffee, posted Aug 10th 2006 12:36PM
veronica mars logoMan, I have to limit myself to only five things I'm looking forward to for the fall TV season? What in the hell was I thinking? Well, at least it doesn't stop you readers from letting us know what your picks are, so sound off!

Anyway, here's my short list:

1) Veronica Mars season three -- I've been completely hooked on this show ever since I did my quick reviews of season one last year. The writing has only gotten better with each episode, and I'm sure the new season will be no different in that respect. What will be different, though, is how the mysteries are solved throughout the season. Instead of one or two "big bad" mysteries that wrap up in the final two episodes, the season will basically be in three chunks, each chunk having a big mystery solved. I'm nervous while at the same time excited to see how it plays out. Plus, I'm once again not having to decide between watching this show live or ...

2) Lost season three -- Need I say more? Last season left us with a doozy to contemplate, and the spoilers leaking out here and there about this new season is mouthwatering. OK, maybe that's a poor choice of adjective. This season will also work a bit differently in that we'll see a big block of new shows, all in a row and without repeats splitting it up, then a long break, and then the last big block through to the finale. During that break, ABC will show episodes of another great show, Daybreak, followed by new episodes of ...

3) The Nine -- I'm jealous that Bob nabbed this one for reviews before I did. A few of us got to see the pilot episode a couple of months ago, and I think the consensus was pretty unanimous: this is a great show. True, we haven't seen past episode one, but it just has that ... feel to it that makes you not only know it'll last, but you want it to last. This was the only pilot out of all the new shows we saw (and we saw near all of them) that I watched twice. On purpose. At least I'll get to review episodes of ...

4) Buffy the Vampire Slayer season eight comic -- Why not? It's based squarely on a television series, and a very successful series at that. Joss Whedon's writing it and has said specifically that it's meant to act as an eighth season of the show. Wouldn't fans of the show like to see the issues reviewed as though they were TV episodes? And you might not think someone looking forward to Veronica Mars and a Buffy comic would be so stoked to see the next season of ...

5) FOOTBALL! -- Finally there's some not-so sweat-your-ass-off weather here in the Bay State, and there's that ever so slight tinge of fall in the air. And other than the aforementioned TV shows I'm looking forward to, this weather makes me think of nothing other than Sundays watching the Pats. I'm just a wee bit sad/mad/nostalgic about Vinatieri not clutch-kicking for us anymore, but I digress. What else would I watch on a Sunday afternoon/night or Monday night? What? Prison Break? Crap.

(Honorable mention: Battlestar Galactica, The Shield)

If you were going to rate a show based on a pilot, then more shows then just The Nine deserve to be on this list. Like, oh,say, Heroes...or maybe...The Class?

As for returning shows, I can't believe you didn't mention The Office; shame on you!

Other than those points I mentioned, the list is fairly accurate. After all, not all of us are Housewife crazy for whatever networks come up with for Sunday.

I'm looking forward to the Buffy season 8 comics too.But the rate it's going, the first issue probably won't be out in the Fall.More likely it will hit in the beginning of 2007.

Marc, I think YOU are nuts. Trust me, The Nine is going places. If you didn't get it then, well, I dunno what to say. Friday Night Lights? *Really*?! Jesus.

The Nine? Are you guys nuts? Easily one of the worst pilots this year second only to the Wedding Album. None of the characters are particularly interesting or well done. Horribly transparent in its manipulation of the audience. You can practically see the strings on each plot device as they are clumsily moved about. The flashback device with the police inteviews is blatantly stolen from Inside Man.
I can't believe the hype you guys are giving this pos. Have you seen the good pilots??? Friday Night Lights is easily the best pilot I've seen in years- hopefully they can battle through their lousy timeslot and NBC's lack of promotion relative to Studio 60 and Heroes.

College football... pshaw. :)

The BCS has all but ruined the college game for me. But I love the pros and fantasy football... Oh yeahhh!

Add my vote to VM as most unappreciated series out there. And, oh yeah, Kristen Bell is yummy dontcha know.

I strongly encourage everyone to watch Veronica Mars, type in veronica mars pilot in YouTube and watch it! Season 1 is available right now on DVD and Season 2 comes out August 22nd. It's gonna be on Tuesdays at 9pm starting October 3rd on the new CW Network which is a merger of UPN and The WB.

I watched The Nine twice too. I love a show that challenges fans with complicated details. I was surprised at how natural all the actors were with one another towards the end of the episode. Can't wait for the premiere.
