Brotherhood: Samyutta 11:10

by Michael Canfield, posted Aug 14th 2006 10:55AM
Cast of Brotherhood(S01E06) Samyutta 11:10* The line separating the bad guys and the worse guys gets further obliterated this week. Caffe brother Michael does a favor that taints those involved. Poor brother Tommy, meanwhile, already torn up inside after having to ask his father-in-law for help last week, now has his lovely mother Rose rub his nose in it at the weekly family dinner. Just when was almost beginning to sympathize with her. Never again, she's foul.

Eileen dresses her down, before skipping off to the john to snort coke. Maybe she should have just kept those shoes. Eileen's oldest daughter Mary Rose finds one of her Mom's joints, and starts holding her in contempt. She looks to be the next one the Michael will draw into his expanding net, when he catches her smoking pot herself, and seems to take more a direct interest in her than her parents have been shown to take, so far. This episode was another strong one for Annabeth Gish (Eileen). At forty-five minutes, it ran shorter than most, and, to great effect, focused more intently on Eileen and Tommy's marriage -- which continues to hurl toward crisis.

*(A Samyutta is a chapter of a Buddhist text, but every search I made for "Samyutta Book 11 chapter 10, or the like, just brings up links to this episode of Brotherhood. If anyone out their knows the text of a passage this might refer to, maybe you can post it in comments.)

I don't believe it is the Roman number II. I did find a German translation of the Sakka Samyutta (which is Chapter 11 of the Samyutta Nikaya), verse 10, here:

By using an internet translator, I found a couple of key words and searched on them, locating what I believe is an English translation of the story here:

http://www.palikanon.com/english/pali_names/i_/isayo_samuddakaa_s.htm

"Long ago, many virtuous seers lived in huts on the seashore. At that time there was a war between the gods and the Asuras. The seers considered the gods righteous but feared harm from the Asuras. They went, therefore, to Sambara, lord of the Asuras, and asked him for a pledge of safety; he refused, saying that the seers were followers of Sakka. The seers thereupon cursed him to suffer everlasting terror. It is said that that same night Sambara woke up thrice, seized with fright."

Make of that what you will.

Samyutta means being in your darkess moment/distressed/caught between a rock and a hard place, so to speak as we say in todays world.
Constantine was the one that changed our beliefs and omitted quite a bit from the bible as we know of it today. Christianity was really Paganism. And Saturdays used to be the Holy day-now it is Sundays. Thanks to Constantine.

Samyutta is a "book/Chapter" that was omitted from the original scriptures when Constantine changed the beliefs of all and "made" christianity as it is known today-especially to catholics/episcopalians/protosents, etc.. It USED to be Pagan, and women USED to be EQUAL w/men, and Saturday was the "Holy" day for prayer, etc...
Samyutta means being caught between a rock & a hard place, so to speak, in our world today as we know it.

It is not 11:10 it is Roman numeral II:10.

The Sun Deity's Prayer for Protection

On one occasion the Blessed One was living near Savatthi at Jetavana at Anathapindika's monastery. At that time Suriya, the sun deity, was seized by Rahu, Lord of Asuras. Thereupon calling to mind the Blessed One, Suriya, the Sun deity, recited this stanza:

i. "O Buddha, the Hero, thou art wholly free from all evil. My adoration to thee. I have fallen into distress. Be thou my refuge."
Thereupon the Blessed One addressed a stanza to Rahu, Lord of Asuras, on behalf of Suriya thus:

ii. "O Rahu, Suriya has gone for refuge to the Tathagata, the Consummate One. Release Suriya. The Buddhas radiate compassion on the world (of beings).

iii. "O Rahu, swallow not the dispeller of darkness, the shining one, the radiant and effulgent traveler through the sky. Rahu, release Suriya, my son."
Thereupon Rahu, Lord of Asuras, released Suriya, and immediately came to the presence of Vepacitta, Lord of Asuras, and stood beside him trembling with fear and with hair standing on end. Then Vepacitta addressed Rahu in this stanza:

iv. "Rahu, why did you suddenly release Suriya? Why have you come trembling, and why are you standing here terrified?"
"I have been spoken to by the Buddha in a stanza (requesting me release Suriya). If I had not released Suriya my head would have split into seven pieces. While yet I live, I should have had no happiness. (Therefore I released Suriya)."
