Rockstar: Supernova: Week 7 Perfomances

by Deidre Woollard, posted Aug 15th 2006 11:28PM
One of the problems with performance-based shows is that as the group of contestants gets smaller the amount of filler gets higher. Unfortunately since most of what we have seen of the "rockers" has been onstage, watching them cavort drunkenly is like watching strangers. Last season we got a bit more of the dynamics of the group. This season's crowd is both more seasoned and less fun. Even their letting off of steam looks like work.

Tonight they do the stripped down versions of songs. While I love the addition of the string quartet it seems to throw off some of the stronger competitors.

Zayra took the chance to sing an original song. Her outfit is understated tonight and she sings in Spanish and plays guitar. The song sounds a bit like the theme to a telenovella. She's a little better in her native tongue but the song only proves it's time to give this lovely the hook.

Magni, Starman -- He dresses in a white suit and does a very commanding performance. He's still a bit bland for me but he's getting a little bit of personality.

Patrice, Message In A Bottle -- It's not that she's bad, it's never that. But the arrangement is a bit flabby and her performance is a bit weak. I still think she just doesn't know how to manage a larger venue and get a big crowd rocking.

Lukas, Hero -- A priest's collar? Oh how punk. It goes so well with the fingerless gloves. He plays guitar and sings very slowly. Is it just me or is he especially twitchy this week? His facial expressions are all over the place, smiles, grimaces, eyebrow raises. It only increases his demented imp look but I still think he rocks.

Storm, I Will Survive -- She sings a stripped down version while in a men's suit. Very torchy and as usual so theatrical. She seems to have been taking singing lessons from Jill, aiming for the howl over the precision vibrato. I'll never tire of looking at her but this wasn't my favorite song of hers and the band gives her quite the spanking.

Toby, Solsbury Hill -- Toby plays with Gilby. He sings a bit fast starting off but overall I think this is one of his stronger performances.

Ryan, In The Air Tonight -- Frankly his faux intensity just wears on me. It doesn't matter how much you strain if your heart isn't showing. Cute coat though. Why does the band love him so much? If this guy wins this whole thing I am going to be bummed.

Dilana, Cat's In The Cradle -- She does a harder version of this soft song, making it a bit more rock but still very heartfelt. Dilana and Lukas are still outpacing the competition but the race seems to be getting closer and closer. The two obvious frontrunners are going to have to step it up a notch.

The bottom three are Zayra, Patrice and Ryan, Swap out Storm for Zayra and you've got my bottom three. And I'd give the encore to Toby.

Dilana did a lot to hurt herself last night by allowing the world to see her back stabbing ways. Lucas just continues to stay out of the BS and keeps his focus on the prize. He is flying under the radar while Toby and Magni continue to find themselves in the bottom 3. Storm will go next then Magni because the chicks like Toby too much. Then will go Ryan then Dilana and my boy Lucas Rossi will be the next Rockstar!

I think that Dilana is very talented. If she can learn to keep her thoughts to herself and not say anything negative to 'knock others down' she will be doing well from the nasty experience this week. It is a hard lesson to learn not to bag anyone out. I think she will come back triumphiant. Ryan and Magni are more humble and that takes them a long way. Dilana's arrogance may have cost her some popularity and the band may need to think twice about her confidentiality or coach her before interviews, if she doesn't learn from this mistake. Hopefully she will front this band cos she sings well and fits the image. Toby also has heaps of potential. He is then only one who is sexy and can dance out of the guys. Toby is has a fun sense of humour and would be fun to tour with. He listens and is teachable - a far cry from a person with an ego and arrogance to boot! My hopes are for a reformed Dilana or a confident Toby!

I've become a pretty big fan of the show, especially as the race is getting closer, with less margin among the rockers. I had an interesting idea today, 'what if the band chose 2 for Supernova?'. Why could Dilana not be the frontwoman, and a runner-up like Magni be given a rythm guitar/vocalist slot? Any touring band could use an extra guitarist on stage - a single guitar player has a VERY full plate when music is played live.

Storm didn't exactly do Cake's version because there is much more sarcasm in Cake's version. Storm actually was trying to sing the song. Also she did not say fucking, she said freaking. She also changed another line of the lyrics to how hung or something like that. I love Storm and think she has fantastic showmanship. She needs to grab a song with one of the Supernova guys playing and show them how she can front this band. So what if she's a bit dramatic, this is T-Lee's band after all, shouldn't the lead singer have some drama to them?

I liked how she did the song and I finally voted for the first time because of what the band said to her. She sounded great and it's time for her to really rock again like she did on "Anything, Anything".

Storm did Cake's version of "I Will Survive", which I absolutely love (except for that acapella intro). Did you all notice that she changed the lyric to "I should have changed my fucken lock"? Cake did that. Also, CBS did not even bleep the word. I had to rewind to make sure I heard the right. I'm surprised Cake wasn't credited the way other singers are credited with doing so-and-so's version of whatever song. I don't understand why Supernova was so harsh on her.

On the other hand, Toby MANGLED Solsbury Hill. That song is all about emotion and feeling and Toby just sang it fast. That song was not meant to be sped up. Yet the band loved it. Ugh.

Dilana better win this freaking thing!

Guns N Roses had become a bloated, pretentious dinosaur of a band when Gilby joined to play second fiddle to Slash on guitar. What was once an amazing and dangerous band, they had become a joke and thank God the grunge movement came about and wiped the floor with them and all the hair-metal bands of the late 80's.

Gilby has done fuck all ever since his hired-hand days in GNR - so his rock-star posturing and 'rocking' advice borders on farcical.

It was also an era of Metallica's true last stand when they peaked with the Black album. It's been a steep decline downhill ever since.

Hard Rock/Metal's recent resurgence has been a godsend with some amazing new young bands that would (and will) leave Supernova for dead. (Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage to name a few).

It's kinda funny watching the contestants of this show. They are almost caricatures of themselves. One might imagine if they appeared on the Simpsons in an episode, the would look exactly like they do with their obligatory tattoos et al.

Still, its fun to watch Brooke Burke's robotic, mono-syllabic drawl as she announces these pre-fabricated 'rock-star' wannabees. And I'd much rather be watching Gilby and crew than last season's farce with a bunch of old farts who no-one gave a shit about...INXS.

RE: Gilby did you see him sitting cross-legged on the piano playing a guitar with a heart-shaped sound hole? Who's rockin out now?!

A few things: I'm the one that came up with the name "Crazy Bitch" for Dilana. Came up with that the first week. I meant it completely as derrogatory... and then realized she's the best one for the job. Not the best pure singer. The best rock and roll front person who can hold an audience's attention. Now, this Crazy Bitch has come to pretty much lead the rest to the point where the rest of the crew is being left in the dust. Hats off to Crazy Bitch!

Second. If the earth opened up and swallowed Tommy Lee, I would not cry a single tear.

Third. I have a sneaking suspicion that "Supernova" is already having differences over musical direction. I don't really think this is going to be more than a one album band.

Fourth. The more filler on the show, the more I'm getting tired of hearing Brooke's voice. I swoon when I look at her, and I'm sure she's a fine person, but it's starting to grate on me. This format needs to be tweaked better or just go away!

Oh Lordy!!! DILANA is awesome. I think she would be a great frontman for the band. I don't know how old she is but she looks more in line with the rest of the guys - agewise. I think she'd be on the same page as the rest of them. Their personalities seem to click and let's face it...they arent babies, they've been around the block a few times and won't take kindly to the "young" immature performers i.e. Lucas - he's good on his own...and will probably be fine. The rest of the rockers are good but not for this band. Dilana fits right in and if they are smart they will choose her. I would pay to see this bunch with her in the front of them. LOVE THIS SHOW and to Mr. Keith Dick who had nothing nice to say about the show in a post above or below me...well who is asking you for your opinion on a show that you don't think is worth watching. Mr. Dick! enough said.

>>Ryan is good, but I have a hard time seeing Jeff Goldbloom fronting this band. That's exactly who I see everytime he hits the stage.
