Who knew Cheech could sing?

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 16th 2006 12:39PM
Wayne BradyLast month we found out the roster of singers that were going to be on Fox's reality show Celebrity Duets, and it wasn't a bad roster of singers, despite the presence of "no-talent ass-clown" Michael Bolton. Yesterday, producer Simon Cowell and the network announced the non-singing celebrities that will attempt duets with those accomplished recording artists.

Who will be gracing the screen with their untrained voices? Lucy Lawless, Cheech Marin, Lea Thompson, WWE veteran Chris Jericho, Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Jai Rodriguez (from Queer Eye) and Hal Sparks (of about a billion VH1 talking-head shows and Queer as Folk). It's definitely a more respectable roster than Dancing with the Stars, but they set a pretty low standard.

Hosting this circus will be Wayne Brady, who, despite his brilliant turn as "evil Wayne Brady" on Chappelle's Show, continues to confirm Paul Mooney's theory about him.

Wayne Brady has a great voice. He's does a great job on the new CD by Jim Brickman, "The Disney Songbook", it is beautiful. It's very obvious that Michael Bolton has a great voice, with 53 million records sold, mutiple grammy's and an invitation to sing with Pavarotti, one of the greatest tenors. His latest CD "Bolton Swings Sinatra" has won him accolades from the Sinatra family, being very pleased of how well he sang Frank's songs. This doesn't sound like someone that has no voice or singing ability.

Hal Sparks has assiduously maintained that singing is another aspect of his career. His website has touted his singing, and his band, for years. It may haves seemed a mere hobby to the rest of us, like any teenager with a garage band, but he insisted otherwise up to now. Now, for the purposes of the show, he's maintaining that he's an amateur or a neophyte? Which is it? Jai Rodriguez was on Broadway in "Rent," and although it's been a while, Alfonso Ribeiro was the young star of the Broadway musical "The Tap Dance Kid." This whole deal is kind of weird. I never assumed the contestants on "Dancing with the Stars" had never been on a dance floor before, but I know damned well that none of them had claimed to be dancers or taken a paycheck for it.

Yeah, Jericho's got 3 albums with Fozzy plus a few guest spots on compilation albums under his belt. He's not the world's greatest singer, but he can certainly carry a tune, and if the competition allows for him to "rock out" (although with the professional singers taking part, who knows if they will) then he'll have it won.

Well, I'd imagine that they chose people who had *some* singing ability. That's why I said their voices are "untrained" not that they were bad singers. You also have to realize that duets take a certain amount of vocal discipline, where you may have to sing either louder or softer, and definitely in a different key, than your partner.

Lea Thompson has also been in musical theater and can sing. I think it is funny they are billing most of these people like they never sang before. Hal Sparks also has his own band.

Could it be that Wayne Brady is popular because he's funny, can sing, is good-looking, and can do improv like a master?

Your comments about Michael Bolton are as stupid as you and they are as true as your studies to become a reporter.

I'll add that Alfonso Ribiero worked in Broadway shows as a kid before he was on "Silver Spoons" although he was more known for his dancing than his singing. Lucy Lawless sang some on "Xena" and did Rizzo in "Grease" on Broadway, but then again who hasn't. And there was that time she sang the Star Spangled Banner at an Anaheim Mighty Ducks game, but off hand people don't remember that for her singing!

Actually Lea Thompson would be better on "Dancing With The Stars" or even "So You Think You Can Dance", since she trained as a ballerina with the American Ballet Theater (Baryshnikov told her she was too stocky to be a ballerina).

I definately think that looking at the roster and basing it on singing talent that I know of, Alfonso and Jericho have it locked down. Alfonso sang in The Fresh Price, I think, and Jericho has his own band which is pretty good. Unfortunately, it comes down to the viewer's votes.

I'm voting Jericho all the way but if he gets eliminated, I'm probably going to stop caring...
