USA renews The 4400 for a fourth season

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 23rd 2006 11:34AM
The 4400 CastEvery time we do a post about The 4400 (or even when we don't do a post about, say, a particular episode), we're always surprised at the number of fans who come out of the woodwork to passionately defend and discuss the program. But it looks like USA is fully aware of this fan base, as they've been very satisfied with the show's ratings for the last three years. Because of this, the cable net is renewing the show for a fourth season, with 13 episodes to be broadcast next summer.

When the show premiered in 2004, it received the highest ratings and biggest audience of any basic cable new-series premiere to that point, so the strong ratings it still receives shouldn't be a surprise. But, compared to other shows on the same network, like Monk, Psych, and even The Dead Zone, the show seems to get little media attention -- at least from the non sci-fi crowd. Maybe it'll finally get the attention it deserves in 2007.

As you say doesn't get much media attn. So far two shows into new season (4) and no comments yet here.
What are people thinking about the new relationship of Kyle and Jasmine and Collier. And what about Shawn's political aspirations and his strange bedfelllow. May stack up to be quite a series/season.

I love the show and just finished watching the season finale. I am excited for next year's return and hope that the majority of the same characters will return!

I'm a recent convert. I discovered the show just this year and did a lot of catch up early this summer to understand what's going on.

Now that it's coming back for season 4, I'll probably start buying the DVD collection.

I just can't resist the comparisons to recent events in our world, it piqued my interest early and continues to, and I can't wait for the season finale.

Hooray! While I will be the first to admit that Season Three has been up and down, they've really done some good work building on the premise of the mini-series cliffhanger, especially this season. I was a little disappointed in Isabelle -- she just didn't live up to the hype of the character -- and I got real tired of the whole soap opera element between her and Shawn. The best part of this season so far has been the return of Jordan Collier. It's a shame the producers couldn't talk him off his boat sooner. He really brought a diabolical element to the show last week. I'm still torn as to whether he's a force for good or evil, and whether or not you can distill it down to just those two choices. That is why I'm glad to see USA has a brain in it's head, unlike sister network SciFi. You are right, the show survives by word of mouth alone since USA does very little promotion for it -- certainly nothing like Monk or Psych.

So since you mentioned it...any chance there'll be a post here after the season finale this Sunday? Or maybe even more regular recaps next time? There are DVD sets for catching up.

This season seemed to be giving us filler at the start, probably for damage control on one cast member leaving and Billy Cambell not being available for most of it. Now that Cambell is back, the last two episodes had me hooked and the finale looks to be a good one.

This season has been disappointing. Seems like the writers are making it up as they go along. They really need some focus. It's still good, but it showed a lot of promise at the beginning and hasn't really lived up to it.

The character development in particular is abysmal. Characters make choices that don't make any sense, and often reverse themselves for no apparent reason. At this point, the only reason I still watch it is because i find the premise very compelling. I hope they improve it in season 4, or I don't think it can last much longer.
