Conan will soon be new on Mondays too

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 6th 2006 6:16PM

Conan O'BrienMonday has always been the saddest day of the week for fans of Late Night With Conan O'Brien. The show is always in reruns that night (I guess Conan likes long weekends). But NBC says in new promo spots that Conan will be new on Mondays night from now on, starting September 18.

Hmmm...I wonder if this is his idea or the networks? Did Conan want to go back to doing a new show on Monday nights, or did the network want it, perhaps connected to his getting The Tonight Show in 2009?

By the way, in a recent interview with Charlie Rose, Conan confirmed that he'll probably move to Burbank when he takes over for Jay Leno.

If Conan moves to Burbank, I for one will never watch him again. Johnny moved back when things were much different. Travel as well as other things have changed. New York is where he cut his teeh, earned his respect, and owes his loyalty. If he moves his show good riddance. That is one more reason to love Dave who never moved his show, even though it meant ratings and guests. There are things more valuable than ratings Conan.

Uh, Pete. NBC officially named Conan Leno's successor in September 2004. NBC asked Leno to agree to step down from the Tonight Show in 2009, to ensure that CBS wouldn't lure Conan away and he did. Both Leno and Conan made announcements about it on their shows. So Conan's already been promised the Tonight Show and Leno can't "decide to stay on a few years longer" cuz he's already announced when he'd be leaving, at NBC's request.

I'm making my prediciton now: Conan will never take over the Tonight Show. His comedic style is nowhere near as mainstream as Leno's, and I doubt he could ever change it enough to make it so. He's just too quirky. I think he'd have no problem kissing network butt; he seems to be cowardly in that regard. No, I say either Leno decides to stay on a few years longer or they break Jon Stewart down and he takes over for Leno. Conan will then get pissed and move to CBS after Dave and then, eventually, into Letterman's chair.

Let it be said on this day of this month of this year.

Recently, the show did seem to be most live and no filmed features.

I can't say the quality suffered, so 5 days rule!

I for one hope Conan won't let Country-bands on his show...

The beauty of Conan taking Mondays off is being able to film more off-location bits with the three-day weekend. Also, the Mondays almost always tend to highlight a particularly good episode from the past few months. With latenight, getting a chance to see a classic a second time is a rare opportunity. On the other hand, having a new show on Monday can't really be a bad thing.

Conan is such a character, and I adore him more than I do with Jay. Can't wait to see him then on Mondays.

I just hope they don't whitewash Conan's comedic style once he moves to the Tonight Show. Jay Leno is like watching a Disney version of Conan.

I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with him moving to The Tonight Show. I thought I remember reading somewhere that Conan currently spends a lot of Mondays working, taping comedy bits, etc.

Conan will probably do what Letterman does for Fridays. That is, tape a double header some time during the week and air the "canned" show on the day that the host wants to take off.
