Four more years of Letterman on CBS

by Anna Johns, posted Sep 7th 2006 12:20PM
david lettermanDavid Letterman is reportedly in the final stages of contract negotiation to stay on at CBS for another four years, through the 2009-2010 season. Coincidentally, that's exactly when Conan O'Brien starts hosting The Tonight Show on NBC. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Letterman's relationship with CBS has never been better and the negotiations have been pretty smooth. That's in stark contrast to just about five years ago when Letterman was being wooed by ABC and he was tempted to leave. Apparently the little chats he has by telephone with Les Moonves on his show are bringing the two closer together.

Thank God. I don't even want to think about late night television without Dave.

*Update: The Associated Press says it's a done deal.

Sad. Does Dave really need another $120 million? His son is going to really going to enjoy his inheritance. Every year I become less and less a fan of Letterman. Something is wrong with the man when he knows that Conan will already be hosting in 2009. Les should've swung a deal and got Jon Stewart setup for 2009. I'll be watching Conan at after the news in 2009. The only good that I would like to see, although highly unlikely, is have a retired Leno make an appearence on the Late Show. I don't care for Leno now, but if you've seen Jay back on Dave's 80's show and of course the history it would make for a great TV moment.

I love Letterman and I love Conan. In the UK we get Letterman the next day and Conan 3 days later Conan is on at 22:45 after Leno (on CNBC) and Letterman is on at any time between 23:00 and 0300. As such my sense of their time slot and what they can get away with is slightly skewed, that and the fact we can swear on UK TV. Ultimately, my point is that I do fear that Conan will be neutered when he takes over from Jay.

Wow, a washed up old fool with a turtle-like assistant.

I'd rather 4 more years of Bush.

Ditto all over the place, TVGenius. But, you don't have to be a TVGenius to know that Dave is the best of late night. Craig is really good, too. Jay and Conan just don't ring my chimes. Leno is beyond awful for so many reasons. When the sad night comes that Dave isn't there to cheer me up, I think I may have to just go to bed earlier. When the Powers That Be have to pick a successor to Dave, I would think the list of possibilities would be very very short.

I agree. Late night would be seriously lacking without Dave. I love Craig (#2), but he's only been on the air for a short time, and I don't think he has the 'cred' to take over the reins at 10:35 yet (I live in AZ, deal with it). Get the man a bigger budget, studio and audience, a band and then we'll talk. Dave has Paul, Biff, Tony, etc, Jay has Kevin, Conan has Max, but Craig is all alone... except for Tim Meadows three nights a week (it seems) and that goon from Y&R... and the occasional Count Barker appearance...

Conan's OK, but I'm not gonna like him more when he takes over Tonight. Jay's a disaster, monologue especially (same jokes rehashed night after night after...).

If Dave were to leave, I would almost think CBS would be smartest to try to 'steal' the Daily Show... so long as they don't do for it what FOX did to 'Breakfast Time'... *grumble*
