The Five: 40 years of Star Trek babes

by Brett Love, posted Sep 8th 2006 6:01PM
Yeoman Tamua - Miko Mayama with Captain KirkWhen I first considered doing 'The Five' for the women of Star Trek it seemed simple enough. After giving that some thought though, I realized it's just not possible. Over the hundreds of hours of television and movies that comprise the Trek universe, there have just been way too many beautiful women to boil it all down to just five. I mean, just in the original series you have the likes of Yeoman Tamura (Miko Mayama - pictured), Lt. Landon (Celeste Yarnall), T'Pring (Arlene Martel), Mea Three (Barbara Babcock), Drusilla (Lois Jewell), and Andrea (Sherry Jackson). And that's just to start. So, while I have chosen five of my favorites after the jump, I realize that there are easily another fifty that could make the list. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments. I'm curious to see what the TV Squad faithful think.

Nurse Christine Chapel - Majel BarretMajel Barret - Number One, Nurse Christine Chapel, Lwaxana Troi

The first lady of Trek, Majel is the widow of Gene Roddenberry. Along with these characters, she also provided the voice of starship onboard computers which makes her the only actor to participate in all six trek series, as well as both the TOS and TNG movies.

Away from Trek, Majel has a long list of other shows she has done guest spots on including classics like The Untouchables, Leave It To Beaver, The Lucy Show, and Here Come The Brides.

Nicole de Boer
Nicole de Boer - Ezri Dax

I'm only a casual DS9 fan, so I'm not sure if I am going to anger any of the faithful by choosing Nicole de Boer over Terry Farrell. It's a tough call, and I think we would both be right. In the end, the tie breaker was de Boer's appearance in one of my favorite movies, Cube. Yes, Cube trumps Becker every time.

Among her other credits, the Canadian born de Boer appeared in both the Kids In The Hall television show, and their movie Brain Candy. She currently stars as Sarah Bannerman on USA's The Dead Zone.

Nichelle Nichols as UhuraNichelle Nichols - Chief Communications Officer Uhura

Nichelle was the first African American woman to be featured on a major television series, and later followed that up by being half of the first interracial kiss on US television when Uhura and Kirk kissed in "Plato's Stepchildren" .

Post Trek, Nichols has lent her voice to Futurama, Gargoyles, and Batman: The Animated Series, among other things. She has also written three books. Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories, Saturn's Child, and Saturna's Quest.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of NineJeri Ryan - Seven of Nine

I think Seven of Nine is probably the character most familiar to non Trek fans from this list. For some reason, maybe even two reasons, this character had something of a mainstream crossover, as evidenced by her seven TV Guide covers.

Previous to her Voyager stint, the former Miss Illinois appeared on two short-lived shows that I dug, The Sentinel and Dark Skies. After Trek, Ryan went on to FOX's Boston Public and The O.C.

Marina Sirtis - Deanna TroiMarina Sirtis - Deanna Troi

Even though Ron Moore has described Counselor Troi as one of the show's most embarrassing features, she is still a knockout. And some would argue that had more to do with her being on the show than anything else. The Next Generation's Counelor Troi also made appearances on both Voyager and Enterprise.

Like Nichelle Nichols, Sirtis has also worked on Gargoyles. More recently she appeared in Stargate SG-1, The Closer, and Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Crash.

So there you have it. My favorite women of Trek. Who are yours?

I know exactly who and what episode you are talking about. It was called "Elaan of Troyius" and her name is France Nuyen.

Not sure of her name, but one of my favorite women in the original Star Trek played the lead in the episode "Elain of Dolas". Also not sure of the spelling. It's been some time since I've seen it. "-)

Ezri Dax had my heart the minute she walked into Sisko's restaurant in the last season.

My first television crush was on Grace Lee Whitney's character Janice Rand. She made me very glad the women's uniforms in TOS were so...impractical.

Always had a thing for Terry Farrell and *really* wanted to know just where Jadzia's spots went under that uniform. Still do.

It's no surprise that I would never resist assimilation by Jeri Ryan, in fact, I'd insist on it.

One of my favorite characters from Enterprise was also a severely underused one: Hoshi Sato

And I can't get away without a huge vote for Nichelle Nichols who always managed to ooze tons of sexiness no matter what she did.
