Brett's Fall TV Schedule

by Brett Love, posted Sep 11th 2006 9:06AM
kristen bell is veronica marsOk, I like TV... a lot. You might even say I'm a little obsessed. When I started making up the list for this post I was reminded of the time I took a gig in Alabama. It was only two months work, but those two months were April and May. I didn't know what kind of cable access I would have while there, and you don't want to go missing shows in April and May! So I set up a crazy four VCR system so I wouldn't miss anything. There were charts, graphs, and explicit instructions. Sunday the cable box needs to be left on this channel. Tuesday you need to change tapes in VCR1 and VCR2. Wednesday change the cable box to this channel. Etc. I left the whole mess in the hands of my roomate Jen and made for the Yellowhammer state. When I returned, it was to a huge stack of television goodness. Now, here is my viewing schedule for this season.

Sunday - I'll kick of my week with The Amazing Race at 8:00. I've forgiven them for the disaster that was the family season. At 9:00, flip to FOX and catch Family Guy and The War At Home. Medium takes over at 10:00. I'll be covering that one for the site this season, so it will get recorded on the computer while I watch live. VCR1 will grab Brothers & Sisters while VCR2 tapes Venture Bros. at 10:30.

Monday - CBS gets the live eyeballs at 8:00 with The Class and How I Met Your Mother while I am recording Prison Break. At 9:00 I'll tune in Heroes and record Two and a Half Men. And the night wraps up watching Studio 60 at 10:00 while recording CSI Miami.

jordana spiro of my boysTuesday - I'll be covering Friday Night Lights so it gets the nod at 8:00 while I tape Gilmore Girls and NCIS. 9:00 brings my favorite show, Veronica Mars, which I'll watch live and record on the computer. Just in case of sudden narcolepsy or something. You never know! I'll also tape the poorly titled Knights Of Prosperity. And at 10:00, watch Smith while recording My Boys.

Wednesday - Humpday is crowded at 8:00. To start, I'll be watching Bones and recording both Jericho and 30 Rock. Depending on how Jericho goes, that could flip. As skeptical as I am about where things are headed, I'll still be watching Lost at 9:00. 10:00 will see all three VCRs fire up as I watch The Nine, while grumbling about the cancellation of Invasion, and record South Park , Top Chef, and Freak Show.

Thursday
- As much as I like My Name Is Earl and The Office, they are relegated to tape status by the almighty Probst at 8:00. I'll also be recording Ugly Betty. Supernatural takes over at 9:00. I'll be covering that one this season. For the first time, no C.S.I on my schedule. The Gil/Sara debacle at the end of last season has ended that one for me.

las vegasFriday - And to bring my week to a close, I'll be watching Sci-Fi's Dr. Who at 8:00 and Battlestar Galactica at 9:00. Las Vegas, Psych, and Men In Trees will finish off the recording for the week. Who knew Friday night would be so good?

Saturday - And on the seventh day, I nap... Actually, I'll catch up on any taped stuff I haven't watched yet and watch a whole boatload of racing. But you don't want to hear about that.

That's the plan for now. A couple of the new shows will probably drop off of the list as we move through the season, like always. It seems like a lot, but with a viewing plan, and crazy ninja mastery of the fast forward button, you can motor through things pretty fast. And it helps if you don't sleep very much...

I don't see why the networks have given up on Saturday. But there's really nothering on to watch Saturday.

Overall, Monday, Wed., Thur. will be heavy nights for me. I bet I give up Shark and Smith after a few weeks. There's something on every night, except Sat., that I'm excited about.

I find you can fit more stuff in by recording everything then skipping all the adverts, plus if I'm using up my recording capability I start a show 15 or so minutes in then rewind to the beginning, I then skip the adverts in show so that I've caught up with it by the end. An hour in 45 minutes.

Keep in mind that some shows are on iTunes and other outlets, so you don't always need to record every single show in a timeslot.

Thank you so much for watching Battlestar Galactica and Veronica Mars. It seems like no one I know watches these shows, yet I feel they are incredible. And married to a Brit, Dr. Who is a must-see. The second season (we've already seen it) is touching.

Thank you!

Zach, I wouldn't try to convince you that The War At Home is a good show. Even though I watch it, I can see why people wouldn't like it. And really, if it does get cancelled, it won't bother me. All I can tell you is that the wife and kids make me laugh. I do agree with you, somewhat, about Rappaport. He is the weak link of the show. I'd really like to see what it would be like with a better actor in that role.

PVR's are nice, but the problem is, it can get a little bit expensive. VCR's, while not amazing, still do a decent enough job, especially if you're not going for widescreen. I'd maybe recommend on getting a decent dvd recorder, as it's like a VCR, but a little bit more high tech, though that said, the tape still has a couple more years left in it.

Project Runway I get through iTunes (I didn't include it in the list as it will be over soon).

I will admit I am a whore for anything HBO, as I'll give any show on there at least a reasonable effort to like. Well, everything except for Dane Cook, which even being on HBO won't get me to watch. CSI: Miami is a show I catch when it's on, and while good, I'm just not pulled to it too much.

There are some shows I've been meaning to watch, but just haven't got around to, and it seems a bit too late now. Specifically Battlestar and Bones. Lost I'm thinking I may give another try, as I watched the first season, and about a quarter of the second, but the just plain horrible acting got the better of me. Honestly, that blonde Australian woman just makes me cringe whenever she is on screen.

As long as Studio 60 and Dexter get second seasons, then I'll be happy. Them and Lucky Louie, which for some reason, I've actually started to love.
