Stargate Atlantis: Phantoms

Rodney talks up the alien machine he knows nothing about... yet
(S03E06) When the writers came up with Phantoms, the recipe was a dash of classic science fiction premise combined with a cup of alien technology and a sprinkling of imminent death.

When I went into this episode, I thought it was going be more horror than anything else. I was wrong, and that made me happy. It was a bit disappointed that it only delved into what I'd call character stereo-types. Our action heroes go gun nutty in the woods. The doctor hallucinates about his patients. Rodney... really likes jumping away from explosions. I enjoy it a bit more when eps like this deliver a bit more on the character side.

Ronon's wraith chasing adventure was unsurprising. It didn't do much for me until he almost shot Shep. Shep's flashback adventure was a bit more interesting. Again, it could have served up a bit more info on Shep than his attempt to rescue another pilot.

Rodney's jump from the cave was a nice little gag, but having him get shot by Shep was probably the best bit of the show. After that, I figured that Tayla would get the machine shut down, but was concerned about how fast the effects would wear off. I wondered if one of our core characters might get shot before things cleared up.

On the whole, it was a good episode. The effects of the machine were identified early on, I wondered why they didn't just blow the thing up. Rodney made a big deal about they guys shooting it, but I'm thinking that a grenade inside the machine would have done the trick - especially with the hybrid organic technology.

I'm with you Doc. I always enjoy both Stargate series, some episodes more than others, but I've never been really disappointed by any episode.

Maybe I'm just a GateHo, but there's worse things to be.

Hmmm. Maybe I'm an optimist, or just blissfully unaware, but I never really seem to find much to criticize about any of the Stargate eps...

Maybe it was just me, but I thought this was the most boring episode -- I thought both Stargate episodes were boring and based on tired old sci-fi plot devices.
