Did CBS censor Bill Maher?

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 18th 2006 2:02PM

Bill MaherThe CBS Evening News has been crowing about their new "Free Speech" feature. Oh, sorry, it's actually a more funky font that we can't reproduce here. More like "freeSpeech." They say that you can come on and talk about anything that you want, but Bill Maher mentioned on his HBO talk show the other night that when he tried to do one of the segments, about religion, CBS said he couldn't do it, and they sent over a list of "acceptable" topics.

CBS, however, is denying that Maher was censored, and they say that one of the freeSpeech segments that has already aired addressed the topic of religion (I haven't seen every episode so I'm not sure). Hmmm...maybe they were a little antsy about the way that Maher was going to address religion?

Actually, bill says he's agnostic, but we will see. Both sides NOW say that he may appear.

Maher's an athiest who does not have nice, fluffy things to say about religion. His perspective would not fit in with the nice, fluffy, um, "newscast" that CBS is producing these days. Plus, athiests may actually rank lower than Muslims in mainstream public approval these days. CBS wouldn't want to inject some kind of "controversy" into its mushy porridge of infotainment that it airs between antacid and adult diaper commercials.
