Grey's Anatomy: Time Has Come Today (season premiere)

Grey's Anatomy: Time Has Come Today(S03E01) Season premieres are always a little bit of a letdown, aren't they? Those cliffhangers that were oh so effective at hooking you in and keeping you wanting more all through the summer end up looking a bit silly in retrospect when things start to play out the next season. The third-season premiere of Grey's Anatomy has elements of that. When we left off last May, Denny was dead, Izzie was a mess, and Meredeth just had prom sex with Derek and needed to choose between him and Finn.

Now we're back, and of course, none of those issues get resolved. But at least by the end of this episode you have a feeling that things are going to be pretty interesting over at Seattle Grace this year.

Lots of flashbacks in this episode. We see the party the interns go to at the hospital before their first day three years ago. We see Meredith on a carousel as a child witnessing her mother get dumped by Webber. We also see Derek's reaction right after he finds out that Addison was cheating on him, and the scene where Mer and Der meet at Joe's bar when neither of them knew they'd be working together. The theme? Time. Everyone needs more time, but doesn't get it.

It's the day after the Denny Debacle is over, and everyone's feeling it. It was a good move to have Izzie lying on the floor in her prom dress, refusing to get up. Right now, she can't deal with how she ruined her medical career. All she can do is think of Denny. Everyone comes to her in turn, trying to get her to get up and get out of that dress. But the only one who seems to get what she's doing is Cristina. Somehow, I forgot that she's half-Jewish, and when she comes in to tell Izzie about sitting shiva, "Eating, not sitting on anything higher than a foot, no shaving... wearing dirty clothes..." she realizes that Izzie's doing her own form of shiva.

Everyone's feeling the effects, even Bailey. She deeply regrets not intervening in Denny's care sooner, and her despair is paralleled in how she reacts when she tells the husband of a head trauma victim, who happens to be in quarrantine because they were exposed to the plague, that she didn't make it. Steve Harris plays the husband, and he does a great job of playing the emotions and helplessness involved. But seeing Miranda's regret is a revelation; it shows that the toughness is starting to break down a little, as if becoming a mother is putting tiny cracks in that hard shell of hers.

It's an episode of parallels. An abandoned newborn comes in, and none of the four girls suspected of leaving the baby want to admit to it. Addison relates to Alex that she can understand that moment of panic, when you do something that you can't take back even if it's against your better judgement. Of course, we know why she understands. And we also realize that a) she knows what happened at the prom (she found Mer's underwear) and b) Derek's on the verge of dumping her. All it took was a quarrantine with O'Malley for Derek to realize that. He made a choice last year, but it was wrong. He loves Meredith. Well, duh!

But Meredith has a choice, too. Despite everything, Finn comes by and tells Mer that Der is bad for her, and "if there's a race, if there's a ring, my hat is in." even if she's "dark and twisty." But Derek comes in -- all "McGuilty," as Cristina called it -- and tells Mer he loves her. Jeez. I really hope we settle this soon, because I reeeeeaaaaallly can't take another season of Meredith going back and forth not knowing what she wants and frowning the entire time she tries to decide. Make choice and stick with it, woman!

Finally, there's Callie, the voice of reason. "We're all 17. It's high school with scalpels," she tells Finn while Meredith is talking to Izzie. She knows all of these doctors are emotionally underdeveloped, even her; she's at George's place cooking for him and he hasn't even told her he loves her. When he comes back from the quarrantine, after a heart-to-heart with Shepard, he still can't say it. We all know why, right? She's skinny, blondish, and can't riggin' decide already which mothereffin' guy she wants to be with. I swear she drives me crazy...

*Cough* sorry, where was I? Oh, in the last storyline, Webber ends up choosing the hospital over his wife. But, as usual, Shonda Rhimes and company pack in one too many storylines, and the Webber one gets the short end of the stick. That story is interesting, what with his involvement with Meredith's mother, but it's never given enough space to breathe and be explored. But it's better than not giving Webber anything to do. And we don't see Burke until the very end, where Cristina finally breaks down over what happened to him during the Debacle (hint: he got shot a little).

Nice job overall by Sandra Oh in this episode. She'll be a focus next week, when we finally find out what that role that Diahann Carroll was going to play during her guest stint: Burke's mother! Looking forward to that showdown.

Hello i'm so confused!!

I watched Sept. 21st season premiere and it wasn't that good as they didn't recap right from where they left off at the season finale. Then I've read that they ended up showing the wrong episode and then aired the proper one on Sept.28th which I missed !!! because CTV had it on at 8pm instead of 9pm. I was in the hospital with a sprained knee and so i taped it and of course missed it completely not knowing NBC had it on at 9pm! I'm so mad!! So i completely missed SEpt. 28th episode. Thanks a lot CTV!!! Can someone help me find a re-airing of that episode or do I have to wait until next summer to get it on dvd??
Thanks

Ok, so i think the season premire left more than a little to be desired. The finale last season was so huge, i literally walked around for ten minutes on the phone w/ my grey's buddy and said, "i can't believe she did that. meredith's a homewrecker. and this time, it was her fualt." then the season premire comes on, and it was bland, to say the least. the only thing i know for sure @ this point is that meredith and mcdreamy can't get together, even if they did do the "nast nasty" as christina put it. because he's married. and finn has plans. seriously, though, i think he deserves a better name that mcvet. catchy, but totally skimping on how hot he is. if meredith doesn't choose finn, i think she should just go back to her knitting.
i must say, though, i thoroughly enjoyed the scene where derek kicks addison out. it reminded me that they did have a life together before seattle grace because, in the show, they kind of skip over that aside from the occasional mark reference. (mmmmmm, mcsteamy) props for addison for putting those panties on the board. it keeps in line w/ the whole high school theme that they've got going on with the prom, the prom sex, and the "seventeen w/ scalpels." plus, she's allowed a little bit of bitchy revenge.

I finally got around to watching this episode last night - and was disappointed. It had a few moments - but the dramatic moments seemed forced and in spots - illogical.

For instance - the Steve Harris character was slightly delusional and in quarantine; what other purpose would there be for Bailey to add to his feverish angst by telling him his wife had died other than to create a dramatic moment? Seriously - wouldn't news like that be normally delivered in person where true consolation could take place instead of the cheesy "put your hand on the glass on my hand!" Bleah...

And in the flashback scene where Meredith first meets Dr McHaircut - didn't anyone find it unusual that 2 doctors - some of the most ego driven people in the western world - failed to mention their chosen professions to one another when they first met at the bar? I know they couldn't due to the very first episode, but it simply makes no sense from a 'real world' standpoint.

This episode seemed to be lacking in humor as well. Maybe not totally humorless - but not nearly as much humor as is often the case. Comic relief is really important for this show. Lack thereof can make it depressing really fast.

Having read the previous comments - I'm hoping this episode WAS slapped together quickly and they're able to get on with the 'real' episodes next week.

What was the song on the show that had lyrics 'running out of time"? and who performed it?

So apparently Derek kept Meredith's panties...what, as a souvenir? Good grief, these two are both so selfish they deserve each other!

Also, I feel so bad for Sara Ramirez (Callie)...she's probably a normal size 8 or 10 in real life (as am I) but next to all the other size 0s in the cast she looks like a moose!

I agree that this episode had me hating McDreamy. And I used to love his character. But at the end I was shouting at the tv, calling him an a-hole. He's still married and he's telling Meredith to make a choice? Please. It's nice that he comes across as non-pushy, but he's being a selfish ass. And how is Meredith dark and twisty?

My prediction is that Meredith will make the smart choice and go with Finn for a few episodes. McDreamy will mope. And when McDreamy makes sad puppy face, all the females' in the universe hearts go squishy and McDreamy and Meredith will get back together. Probably after some dramatic event, outside, in the rain, with a great song that will be released within a few weeks playing in the background.

I wonder what they'll do with Addison. I really do enjoy her character. Maybe she'll hook up with McVet. Although he's a tad boring. Or Alex.

Addison got the panties from Derricks suit jacket which was draped over her when she was sitting on the bed.

Shonda,

Excellent job! I think it is clear that you could not address all issues in this 1 episode. I was screaming in the beginning (Addison holiding Meredith's panties) and I was screaming in the end (McDreamy telling Meredith that he loves her). I look forward to the next episode to tie up even more lose ends. Let's be honest, there was a death, a tragic death, and we needed to mourn Denny. We have mourned Denny with Izzie and the rest, let's move on to mourning McVet.

I know, it seemed like such a sweet, sincere note. What can I say, I'm a McDreamy fan!!!

Keep up the excellent work, Shonda!

I thought this episode was a good way to start the season. It tied things together from the beginning to the end. I loved the flashbacks.

I also wanted to say that Derek has not been repeatedly sleeping with Meredith, like a comment earlier had said. This was the first time for a long time....I just wanted to clear that up. Maybe it has something to do with my love for Patick Dempsey that spans all the way back to Ronald in Can't Buy Me Love, but I wanted to declare that.

I am excited for a great season!
