The Office: Gay Witch Hunt (season premiere)

by Michael Sciannamea, posted Sep 21st 2006 11:45PM

The best sitcom on TV(S03E01) OK, I know I sound like a broken record, but The Office is hands down the best sitcom on television. If this season's first episode is not considered an instant classic, then there's something really wrong going on here.

I give the writers credit for resolving the Pam/Jim issue right off the bat. I kept going back and forth as to whether they were going to hook up or not, and I also give them kudos for not taking the easy route and have them fall in love and run away together. In addition, I liked the plot twist of Pam calling off her wedding with Roy. She at the very least showed some real independence and decided that marrying Roy would have been a disaster. We'll probably see Roy doing some wacky things in order to, as he said, "win Pam back."

How hilarious was Michael and his struggle with accepting Oscar (or anyone else) as a gay person? He demonstrated all of the stereotypical behaviors that an intolerant person would have, but he still comes across as a genuinely good guy, but just a bit confused about things. Of course, his behavior led to Toby and Jan coming down really hard on him, and Oscar getting some nice perks out of it. The scene of Michael kissing Oscar is worthy of an Emmy by itself, IMHO.

Did you notice how attractive Angela looked? Last season she appeared as cold and hard as her personality. And Phyllis looked a little more dolled up as well. Meredith, of course, is still quite disturbed, and the licking of the hand sanitizer actually made me groan out loud.

But let's get back to the big issue of Jim and Pam. The subplot of Jim taking a job in the Stamford branch was an interesting one, and we had a chance to see that craziness in Dunder Mifflin is not confined to the Scranton office. However, I think it would not be a stretch to say that Jim and Pam will get together in some format during the course of the season, so the long-distance relationship/longing can work for a little while, but I'm not sure if it will remain interesting over the entire season.

I say again that The Office is back with a vengeance! There aren't too many programs out there who leave me wanting more after the end of a particular episode, but this show does it each and every time.

Oh yes, and for those speculating about Jims return, did anybody notice the preview of next week's show? it looked like jim was coming back already. If true, thats a shame i think.

I thought the entire episode was hillarious. I'm always nervous with season premiers because it seems like as a season goes on, the writers get in a zone, and things sort of mesh together well; and sometimes when there's time off, they start up awkwardly.

I didn't think that was the case for this premier though, I thought it followed really well with last season.

"That's what she said...or he said" made me laugh my ass off.

I thought this episode was really funny and cant pick a favourite joke - the gaydar was hilarious, but i really loved the first line by Dwight, where he's crying about how he misses Jim, then all of a sudden- "False".
However the amount of gay-bashing (whether unintentional or as a joke) and alternately patronizing 'its okay to be gay' attitude was as others mentioned, too cringemaking for me to truly enjoy the episode. Hopefully that over the top style was a one off.

I have always loved this show, but this first episode of season three will remain one of my all time favorites. I can honestly say I laughed out loud. I work in an office, and i think that's why i find it so funny...there are characters out there in everyone's world...can't wait for this week's episode

This is sick!! If men want to kiss men then let them do it without pushing it on everybody in the world!! Just like they have rights SO DO WE!!

I wasn't a big fan of this episode. I would rather not have seen the Jim/Pam flashback. I think it would have worked just to show that Pam broke off the engagement and Jim tranferred, and leave it a bit in the air to wonder exactly what happened after the kiss. Other posters have commented on the best parts (Oscar and Angela having a "gay affair", Dwight contemplating Angela having an affair with a woman, buying "gaydar" on the Internet, Stanley and the toaster, etc.), but the whole scene in the conference room just made me uncomfortable. I had to close my eyes during the Michael/Oscar kiss because it was just too weird. I think this and "Diversity Day" are the weakest episodes: they touch on things that are still taboo in our culture, even though we are more open about them, and the cringe to laugh ratio is just too high for me.

Was anyone else a little bit reminded of AD with Roy's headshot and Michael cussing and having it bleeped/blurred out.

Also, about the camera crew following Jim, it makes sense when you think about it. They followed him because he is part of the "Scranton Story", it makes sense for them to follow him so his story doesn't just die. Plus, it's even easier for them with it being the same company.

Those of you who have made reference to the Pam/Jim relationship being resolved are clueless. It has a long, long way to go.

I agree with those who have said the episode was over the top. It will take a lot to surpass "Booze Cruise" and "Christmas Party."
