How many television sets in your home?

by Anna Johns, posted Sep 22nd 2006 8:25AM
televisionThe average American home has more televisions than people. When I saw that statistic from Nielsen Media Research, I thought I was bucking the trend. And then I thought a little harder and realized I'm the average American. There are two people in my household: my husband and myself. And, guess how many television sets we have? Three! There's the main set in our living room, hooked up to two TiVos, a Nintendo and a DVD player. Then there's the TV set in our bedroom, which we got this summer when it was 104 degrees and the only air conditioning in our house was in the master bedroom. Oh, and that elusive third television set is in the garage. It's positioned right in front of the very dusty treadmill. Still, it's plugged in and it sort-of works (the pixels are dying so it looks like everything is in letterbox).

I wanna know: How many television sets in your home? And, which rooms are they in? This could get interesting...

So yep, more TVs than people.

We have a ton of tv's, mostly because we keep them when we upgrade.

65" HDTV in the living room
32" SDTV in the den/office (hooked up to cox dvr and xbox media center)
27" SDTV in guest room
24" flat screen tube SDTV in master bedroom (soon to be replaced by a nice lcd of the same size)
20" SDTV junker in kids room for watching dvds
20" SDTV waiting to be mounted on patio by pool and hot tub (freebie!)
14" SDTV junker in shop

And of course a few tv's scattered around the house with TV tuner cards. Seems pointless to get rid of an old tv unless you don't have a place for it, especially if you're a sports junkie. We're about 75% through a video distribution system so we can watch the same thing on every tv in the house at the same time. We have a HD DVR on the 65" HDTV and a ST DVR on the 32" tv in the den. The tv in the master bedroom is hooked to a XP MCE computer that also has a HDTV tuner card and can take a feed from the HD DVR in the living room or OTA HD broadcasts. A/V is my hobby but I figure if you're going to do something, do it right!

2 TVs in our apartment. Technically there are 4 people living here, but only 2 at the moment.

1 20inch in the living room, and
1 mini, portable TV in one of the bedrooms.

Two people in house, both 53 years old.

One HD set in the living room with a dual-tuner DVR.

One set in the bedroom with a dual-tuner DVR.

One computer with 21" HD monitor and a dual-tuner DVR.

One 5" portable.

One 2" color handheld.

So that's five TVs, 3 DVRs capable of recording a total of six shows at the same time.

Oh, and there's one radio that gets audio for channels 2-13.

Wow i remember several years back when the study said it was average to have same amount of tv's per people. Now we all have a lot of tv's but remember the people reading this blog are tv fans...so of course we are all going to have a bunch of tvs...lol

When i lived at my parents:

7 tvs : 3 people-
1 - Master bedroom
1 - my bedroom
1 - Guest bedroom
1 - 4th bedroom/office
1 - Living room
2 - handheld tv's
(the kitchen was an open kitchen with a perfect view of the living room tv or im sure one would have made its way into there as well)

Now that i live by myself:

4 tvs : 1 person-
1 - Living room
1 - Bedroom
1 - Handheld
1 - computer (for as much time i watch tv on my pc, yes it counts)

I recently had my girlfriend move in - so she unloaded her 25 inch set and kept her 56 inch HDTV. I unloaded my 55 inch HDTV and 19 inch on my sister while keeping my 30 inch LCD HD and 25 inch in the guest room.

We've still only got 3 TVs in the house but we own 6!
