Survivor: Cook Islands: Dire Straits and Dead Weight
(S13E02) The social experiment continues on week two. The tribes may be divided by race but that doesn't mean that there are not other prejudices in play. If anything the racial division seems to compel the tribes to turn on each other even more in an effort to display the best possible version of their race to the world. Which begs the question, is the usual backstabbing and cliquish behavior more uncomfortable to watch if you know that the tribes have been purposefully grouped by race? At Hiki they are happier without Sekou but they don't seem to be much luckier. Creating fire is a major challenge. It seems to me that a tribe with only one male is at a bit of a disadvantage.
Over at the Aitu tribe they are catching shellfish, hunting chickens and exchanging stories. Ozzy finds himself frustrated by the others who won't listen to him and doesn't get along with Cristina, the fiesty police officer. Aitu is eating royally but Billy gets in trouble for being a bit lazy and snoring. I don't think I have ever seen a tribe feast so well without having won some sort of food reward. Ozzy starts thinking about throwing the competition in order to get rid of Billy which doesn't sit well with Cristina.
Over at Puka they are hunting chickens too, using a box trap as opposed to a net. And Cao Boi is leaving his red marks all over the place, healing the tribe and marking them up. But his racial comments are alienating his own tribe even though his remarks seem to come from an innocent and playful place. If Puka goes to tribal it seems pretty certain that he would be the first to go.
At Raro, the triumphant Jonathan returns but is a bit upset about how little has been done by his tribe. Flicka and Jonathan are interested in raising the sleeping platform, the gossip girls, Parvati and Candice don't really have much of an interest in doing anything but preening each other and beefy Adam just wants a good meal.
This week's challenge includes both memory and physical components. The challenge mainly belongs to Raro and Puka who are tied and Aitu comes in last. It is patently obvious that Aitu threw the challenge (which luckily saves Hiki from going to tribal council two weeks in a row). They send Yul from Puka to Exile Island which makes sense he could easily be the best player of this season but wasn't the smartest move since he finds the immunity idol. As Jackie points out on her blog, he's totally this season's Terry. Let's hope he has better luck keeping his ego in check.
Billy knows that he is done for even before the immunity idols are handed out but Aitu's obvious throwing of the challenge really bothers Cristina. There's some vague talk of an insurrection against Ozzy but who will argue with a man who feeds you so well.
At tribal council, Ozzy insists he isn't the leader and Billy says that they threw the challenge to get him out. J.P. admits that it is true. Meanwhile Billy says that he is in love with Candice over at Raro and that he mouthed the words "I love you" to her. Say what? It's news to everyone at Aitu, Jeff is flabbergasted and J.P. is completely annoyed by this latest development. Of course, Billy goes home. Both Sekou and Billy wore bandanas in their bio pictures. Is there a bald bias this season or is it the same old age bias that always surfaces? With no real oldsters on the tribes this season it looks like Cao Boi and Jonathan will be next for winnowing out.
