FOX, David E. Kelley developing legal comedy

by Anna Johns, posted Sep 26th 2006 2:33PM
david e kelleyDavid E. Kelley, TV Warrior, is all kinds of busy these days. He is working with FOX on a new comedy about a group of jurors who are sequestered in a motel during a high-profile trial. The network has committed to shoot a pilot of the untitled show. He also recently supervised another comedy pilot for FOX, called Five Finger Discount, and he created a half-hour spin-off of The Practice for star Camryn Manheim. However, his top priority these days is Life on Mars, a sci-fi drama he's creating for ABC (based on the British version). Oh, and he's married to Michelle Pfeiffer.

Oh great - just what we need. Kelley politicizing another show. Leave the original Life on Mars alone - it's perfect as it is!

I am so depressed to learn that Kelley is Americanizing the brilliant, brilliant "Life on Mars," which BBC-America just finished showing. I can't imagine anything less appropriate than the quirky, cutesy Kelley touch for that series. The only advantage I can think of in a US version is not having to decipher those nearly unintelligible Mancusian accents--seriously, some scenes ought to have come with subtitles. But it still wouldn't be worth it.

I see this being more a "Coupling" than an "Office" in terms of success. What a waste.

Well Rabbit, British shows have a hit and miss conversion to a US version.

I personally LOVE the british Office and the US version.

Kelly IS remaking the british Life on Mars into a US version. Don't you believe for one second he is "creating" anything.

Yeh, Armando. I wonder if it is another American television show copying a successful British series. If so, he isn't "creating" anything. All he has to do is Americanize the British script. I am sure it will do well. Look at The Office. They have done amazingly well with Rick Gervais's creation. Hopefully Kelly will be smart and bring in the original creators as producers, as they did with The Office.

Yeah, there's already a show called Life on Mars and it'll beat anything Kelley could ever come up with.

Well, if any of the shows made by David E. Kelley over the years should ever get that "Behind The Scenes" treatment, then the producers should consider John Krasinski of 'The Office' to play DEK.

Just looking at that picture of Kelley makes me think of him giving the famous Jim smirk.
