Bones: The Truth in the Lye

by Richard Keller, posted Sep 27th 2006 10:50PM

Dr. Temperance Brennan(S02E05) Ew!

I have to give credit to the creators of Bones; they certainly know how to find unique ways to decompose a body week after week. And this episode was no exception as the body du jour was quickly dissolving in a bathtub of bleach and liquid Drano. As I said . . . Ew!

But, it isn't the tub full of bloody skin that brings me back each week, it's the fact that this show is good. And, of course, that I review it for this website. So, pushing the image of a pitchfork full of skin out of mind, let's move ahead with the review.

Let's forget about decomposed bodies for a second and speak about relationships. Not about the one between agent Seely Booth and his ex-girlfriend (and mother of his child), who occasionally sleep together. Nor about Booth and Doctor Cam Saroyan, who also occasionally sleep together. Or Booth and Bones, who are really, really, close to sleeping together (which would be the point that I stop reviewing the show because I just hate when they do that). No, I'm talking about Doctor Jack Hodgins and Angela Montenegro. Get these two together already! They're adorable and need to hook up. And not just for a little bit, then break-up due to some stupid thing, They should be together for the length of the show. If you disagree let me know.

Back to this week's storyline. The one husband-two wives concept has been used plenty of times in procedural crime dramas. But, as usual with Bones, they like to twist it up a little. It turns out the wives of the victim knew that he was two-timing each of them. What they didn't know, until later, was that he had impregnated a third person. All three went to confront him and that's when they gave him the bleach bath. But, they actually didn't kill him, because the victim was already dead from an apparent suicide when they reached him. But it wasn't a suicide, and it wasn't even a homicide. It was just a simple accident which, due to a brittle bone condition, turned out to be fatal. Of course, the accident occurred when the victim's boss confronted him about some missing money, and he and the victim got into a little row. So, the boss decided to make it look like a suicide to get away. Ya got all that?

The main thing I liked about this episode was the lack of Bones and Booth. Yes, you heard it right. We actually got to see more interaction between the other members of the Jeffersonian Institution investigative team without Seely or Temperance hanging around. That's nice, because these team members, including Cam, have a good chemistry when alone. It's also the time that Angela steps away from her computers and really shines. I'll go so far to say that I wouldn't mind an episode where Bones is away at some conference and either Angela or Cam (or even Zack) help out with an investigation.

There is one thing that bothered me this week, and it's really a minor quibble. It was the seeming supernatural powers that Bones exhibited this time around. Particularly at the point where she guesses that the third person to sleep with the victim is pregnant. When asked how she knows Bones talks about the woman's gait and the spreading of the something-or-other. I was waiting for her to say 'Oh, I saw it all with my microscopic vision'. I think some of that needs to be toned down a bit because it takes away from her growing humanity.

Before I leave for the week I'd like to make a prediction. I think that Bones will be one of the breakout hits of this season. It has a great cast, good chemistry, the right amount of drama and humor, and it seems to be hitting its stride. As long as they don't hook Booth and Seely up I think it will happen. See you next week.

This was the first time I've ever been 'grossed out' by the decomposing body. Especially when Bones says, 'it's only skin'! Another solidly good episode, a 10 in my book because of all the great bodied Booth sex antics! Twice in one episode? Well at least he changes the sheets regularly!

OK...first off I love the show, and I agree with a poster above...this is the first time I have been REALLY icked by the crime scene!

But I was pretty pissed by the continuity/facts of this one! SO the guy dies from having brittle bone and hitting his head agaisnt a junction box?...then a 12 guage is shoved in his mouth and the result is "dents" in the back of the skull? There would not habe been a "back of the skull" LEFT!

I know...sispension of disbelief, but COME ON!

Episode: blah. CSI had an episode just like this a few seasons ago. Too much was going on. A/H, Booth/ex, Bones/Booth's ex, etc. Someone mentioned a soap opera and they were totally right.

I like the chemistry between different characters, but lets not overdo it. Phew - I can't keep track.

Likes in the epi:
- Tightie whities (whoa)
- Chat between B/B at the end of the ep
- total chemistry
- Sending Zac out to collect evidence

Dislikes:
- soap opera-esque
- CSI-esque
- X files-esque

Come on writers. This so my fav show now.

I totally agree with you about Hodgins and Montenegro; the actors have such great chemistry together and they really play off each other. More so even than Boreanaz (never an acting dynamo) and Deschanel. I also agree it's great to see the supporting cast stepping into the limelight more often. It's udnerstandable that the show concentrated on Bones and Booth in the first season, they are the stars of the show. Thankfully, the supporting players are getting their chance to shine, and I love Tamara Taylor as Saroyan -- she's great. However, I did not really like this episode's mystery -- kind of predictable. The most shocking thing about this episode was the fact that Booth wears tighty-whiteys!

Edgeoforever - I COMPLETELY disagree about Angela and Hodgins.

It's like Beauty and the Geek. and I think they DO have great chemistry.
It's obvious there's already something going on there...I just wonder how long it will be before someone actually says something about it.

Ditto for your prediction on breakout his of the season - would have happened earlier - if only Fox...
nevermind.
I almost forgot what the case was because, duh...Booth in bed - TWICE! What a treat!
B&B - great in any shape or form - together, at odds - just on screen
Absolutely NO on the "adorable" Hodgela - they were each interesting in the season you missed (the race for Toni, the delivery girl anyone? Jack imagining Toni and Angela together - preferring this to an actual chance with Toni?)
Roses from cadavers, talks in tub-o-lards - not my idea of "cute" exactly - and that added to the inane dialogue and lack of chemistry.
Have you missed that all their "hey look at us , we're a couple" public displays are post coital for some time now? They got them together already, and that tub still smells...

Ah, Courtney, I do believe you are correct, I rememeber Booth saying something about that now.

I love "Bones", the first season was great but this season has left me a little cold. The relationship between Seely and Temperance is gone. And the ex-girlfriend sex jumping from Seely just made him look like a womanizing jerk. Sorry but what happened to the chemistry??

I'm not 100% sure but I think the women wanted it to appear like a homicide so they could collect the life insurance money. If one commits suicide, the life insurance is uncollectible and the women all thought he had killed himself and they were gonna be left without any money.
