Grey's Anatomy: I Am a Tree

Grey's Anatomy: I Am a Tree(S03E02) One of the reasons why we here at the Squad do episode reviews instead of recaps is because a lot of the shows we cover are pretty complex. If we tried to recap everything that went on, we'd not only be typing all night, but we'd also likely go oh-so-slightly insane in the process.

I mean, imagine if I had to recap this episode of Grey's? We had a patient with a tree inside him, a lung surgery candidate who likes bathroom nookie, a mourning Izzie baking more muffins than one city can eat, a patient with a tumor that makes him tell the blunt truth, Callie taking a bullet for Meredith, and Bailey's defenses breaking down.

Oh, and Burke's parents showed up. Cristina is so screwed.

Diahann Carroll and Richard Roundtree played Burke's parents. Mr. Burke didn't do much besides be quietly supportive of Cristina's predicament. But Mrs. Burke was on fire, calling out Cristina for saying the interns' nickname for Bailey ("The Nazi") in public, then telling her she's selfish and bad for her son. This is of course, after they barged in on Cristina as she was gyrating on top of Burke in her skivvies (sexiest I've seen Sandra Oh look since Sideways). But the presence of the Burkes is giving Cristina more of a reason to soften up, as we saw at the end of the episode.

I keep wondering why Callie is taking hits for Meredith, as she did when Bailey asked the interns about the bulletin board panties. Is it to stay in favor with George? Anyway, I don't even know why anyone believed her; as hot as Callie (and Sara Ramirez) is, she's twice the size of Meredith. What would have been more realistic is if someone said, "Yeah, right, Callie; you couldn't get those around one leg!" But at least she made Georgie boy jealous, since he never saw those panties before. Now that she's been kicked out of her basement hideaway, it looks like the two of them might actually get closer. Good to see.

Meredith's drving me batty. Why is Shonda Rhimes doing this to her title character? Derek finally has the stones to tell Addison its over, isn't wavering at all now, and Meredith still can't friggin' decide between Derek and Finn. She wants to flip a coin, for God's sake! Then she settles on Derek, but then finds out Finn is "the guy who brings your roommate food when she's sad." This woman has two guys after her, and yet I didn't see her smile once in this episode. Not once! Is her life really all that bad?

Anyway, instead of picking one, she extends Chris O'Donnell's paydays by deciding... to... date... both... of... them. AUGGGHHHHHHH! Good Grief, Shonda! Why can't you settle the matter without turning to plot devices lifted from old Drew Carey episodes? I don't know how you did it, but at this point I hope both McVet and McDreamy go out on dates with Meredith, have some rolls in the hay with her, then dump her ass. She stopped getting my sympathy sometime near the end of last season and she hasn't gotten it back.

(Forgot to mention Benjamin... the 32 year old with the brain tumor. The tumor makes him say whatever pops into his head; so he calls his sister fat, tells Cristina she's self-involved, and influences Meredith to just go with your gut. Until, of course, Cristina tells Mer that Ben didn't make it out of surgery. That's when the dopey dating scheme got hatched. Thanks for dying, Ben!)

Now over to Izzie... it seems like they're paving the way for her to come back to the hospital, aren't they? Sigh. I guess I finally have to suspend disbelief and buy into the fact that a woman who fell in love with her patient then cut his LVAD lines so he could move to the top of the transplant list deserves to remain a doctor. Either that, or I'll have to stop watching the show, which I'm not going to do. Oh, and I hope this is the last instance of "Patient situation makes Bailey see the exact same thing in her situation" plotline. I can't even believe she would blame herself at all for the Denny Debacle. For sure, Rhimes and the writers are doing this to get Izzie back in the hospital and clear the decks for this season, but nothing going on in this storyline makes much sense to me at this point.

Alex getting it on with the lung cancer patient in the bar bathroom was OK, but that plot development was really only there so Alex can utter this line to Bailey: "You're right. I shouldn't get physical with patients."

The ending scene was a hoot, wasn't it? McSteamy, or whatever they're gonna call him, is back, and in Addison's hotel bathroom. At this point, let's hope Derek doesn't get angry at this twist at all; he knows his marriage is over, so let Addie and McSteamy steam it up. What the hell. As we saw with the lung cancer patient, life is short, right?

Hello,

I must say that I like Meredith very much!!! How would you react if your boyfriend turns out to be married, goes back to his wife, calling it finished with you, being mean at you because you want your life back and getting on dates and in bed with other guys - and then when he realizes that he loves you, he wants to come back immediately and you have to say "YES" without thinking??

THat's not how it is supposed to be!!! I'm here right with Meredith. Finn is a nice guy. He was there for Meredith when she was unhappy. Why should she give Finn the red card as soon as Derek decides that his marriage is over?

Can Meredith trust Derek? I completely understand why Meredith wants to date both the guys at first. She wants to be sure! She has to be sure that Derek won't get back to his wife. She has to be sure which man she really loves.

Give her this time!!! It won't take long before she chooses Derek.

You can't be that un-supportive. I am totally with Meredith on that part and I love her character. For me SHE is the show, but of course it's the complete cast as well.

I thought this was much better than the premiere. I can't wait to see Meredith dating Finn and Derek!

Also, I have just finished making a trivia quiz for this episode, i have tried to make this one trickier than the one I did last week (thanks for the feedback from everyone).

I hope you all enjoy it :D

I noticed they dropped the opening credits (with the Royskopp music) sequence in favor of low-keying them over the scenes after the first break. I didn't notice it last week, but I don't think they did it then either. Has the show dropped the opening credits number?

You're right, this wasn't a very good episode and I don't like the way they're tying up some loose ends. I think the show would have been better if Izzie had stayed away from hospital for awhile and slowly came back to what she truly wants to be: a doctor. Like you, I thought the Bailey mea culpa was silly, but I do enjoy seeing "The Nazi" back in action. Loved the final scene. I can't stand McDreamy, the character is written as such a hypocrite: it's OK for him to sleep around, but not the wife. After treating a conciliatory Addison like crap for a year, Derek got a taste of his own medicine. I hope the return of Mark doesn't mean Kate Walsh is leaving the show. I like her character more than most of the others.

Ummmm, alright episode...I too am a little tired of meredith but I think this is what the show's all about right? She can't make a decision and wind up happy or th e show would be over. As far as how mcsteamy getting to seattle ... if I got a phone call from addison I would have a ticket on the concorde. Heck, if I was him I would keep a ticket on the concorde on standbye just in case I got the call(I know it doesn't fly anymore...just a joke). Seriously, it is entirely unbelievable that anyone would ever choose meredith over ms. mcsexy.

I never understand folks who say they're sick of Meredith. It's like the Gilmore Girls fans who got upset when Rory slept with Dean or Lorelai with Christopher -- these are smart women who consistently make bad choices. If Meredith started acting mature and responsibly, it would be even more out of character. I, for one, have no interest in watching drama with flawless protagonists.

Honestly, I feel a little pity for Meredith. Having to choose between such great guys would be great for the self-esteem -- something she's not blessed with an abundance of -- but still, knowing that whatever you end up doing will hurt someone you care about would so taint whichever love you end up choosing, of course, you're going to put it off.

And I loved when she told George not to f' it up with Callie and talked about how dirty sexy she was. It was kind, funny, and shows that occasionally she looks past her own nose at the traits and needs of others.

A perfect lead character? Hardly. A likable lead character? Not always. A watchable lead character, infinitely.

This show, is awful. The thing that sucked you in about ER originally was how realistic it seemed. The nurses and doctors talked like real nurses and doctors. The lighting wasn't that of a soundstage rather you had lots of harshlights and you could really believe that this is what it's like when you show up at a real ER. And though the melodrama was evident from the start, it's a character driven show through and through, it was not a radical departure from reality like this show. Further the characters were actually dynamic and not just single mindedly capricious. No one could have predicted that Dr. Greene would go through all he went through from the first episode. No one could have predicted that Juliana Marguiles character would leave the show with such hope and potential happiness after that pilot. But it felt natural. I won't attest to the current state of the show and its attachment to reality (when the ER got blown up the third time I really stopped watching at all), but those first few seasons were a testament to the compelling drama that a realistic medical show can produce.

Shonda Rhimes has crafted a trite melodrama with as much depth of story and character as the kiddie pool. The characters are flat caricatures. There's the lovestruck pretty girl always in a state of woe over having to choose among her many suitors. There's the hard headed over acheiver and their hard headed mentor. There's the stunning beauty who's lovers she tries to pine over and they either turn out to be jerks or die. And the patients are no different, always sporting a symbolic ailment. The girl that always felt different who it turns out has testicles is probably the worst example. And let's forego any notion that Shonda didn't plan on casting three African-Americans in positions of power with their four white and one Asian interns. And just when you thought they'd forgot a major minority, they introduce Callie, the strong latin character. If she came out and admitted that it was all intentional no one would blame her, it's an interesting social experiment, the minority in power over the majority. Or at least it would be if the characters were at all representative of anything other than the one dimensional facades she's created.
I'm not trying to start a flame war, but I'm bothered when people say things like, "I don't like x and y about this show but I won't stop watching!" If you stop watching then maybe someone will make a better show. If you change the channel on this show enough times then maybe they'll hire someone who can write a show that's deeper than the paper its printed on. Maybe.

Awww, Meredith smiled more than that one time when COD came into the bar. She was actually pretty smily this episode and only scowled once! I love the depiction of the friendship between her and Christina. And yes, McSteamy made my night too.
