CBS greenlights 11th season of The Amazing Race

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 29th 2006 1:07PM
The Amazing Race logoIn 2000, did anyone imagine that CBS, of all networks, would have not one but two respected and critically-acclaiemd reality series that would have seasons totalling in the double-digits? Not at that time; back then CBS was the fuddy-duddy network, and reality was best left to cable networks like MTV.

Of course, with Survivor and The Amazing Race, CBS is now considered to have the gold standard of reality shows. So it's no big surprise to hear that the network has greenlighted an 11th season of Race. It's getting good ratings in its new family-friendly Sunday timeslot, and it's won just about every reality-show Emmy that could be given out. So this was a no-brainer. Wonder what gimmick they're going to come up with for season 11?

The thing is, the show doesn't need gimmicks. The design of the game and the fresh faces each season are enought to sustain it. Gimmicks only detract from this.

I'd like to see a gimmick where different teams have to either split up temporarily, or have to temporarily switch or something fun like that.

I'm a big fan of The Amazing Race so I'm extremely happy to see that the show has been renewed. The interesting thing though is that you mention that it is "getting good ratings in its new family-friendly Sunday timeslot", a statement which would come as a surprise to some of the "fans" who participate in the shows Usenet newsgroup who seem to think that the show's ratings against Football and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" suck and that the Sunday night timeslot is a danger because of football overruns.

Great news! TAR is certainly the classiest of all the "reality" shows on the air, even when they stumble. While the Family Race last fall was largely unwatchable, they recovered nicely with number 9 in the spring (I liked the hippies). This year is off to a good start as well.

I want to see an all star race. There are so many memorable teams that I'd like to see again.
