ER: Graduation Day

by Richard Keller, posted Sep 29th 2006 8:01AM

(S13E02) Before we begin this week I wanted to address something a commenter mentioned about Luka's violent outburst in last week's season premiere. The commenter criticized him for acting in that way because Abby could only provide one child to him due to her emergency hysterectomy. I actually don't think that was the reason.

Think about it. He had already lost two other children to war. His reaction wasn't due to Abby's operation, but rather to the feeling that he was going to lose another young child. Plus, add the fact that the mother of his child was injured, the stress of what he endured during Samantha's kidnapping, and watching his premature son hooked up to all of the lines and tubes, and he had to vent his frustration somewhere. At least he did it on a bathroom mirror.

There, now I feel better. Onward and upward to this week's review. (Warning, there are minor spoilers after the jump if you haven't seen this week's episode).

Abby and Luka's baby boy is okay! Hot damn! I can finally remove my standard question 'Why can't Abby be happy?' from my list. I will admit that I got a mite choked up when I saw Abby holding a healthy baby in her arms. The director of this week's episode tried to make it feel that something horrible had happened to baby Joe, but if they did that I feel that there would have been a mass revolt of the show. Let's face it, we all want to see Abby happy, and we finally got our wish . . . for now, at least.

Abby will be replaced with Sam, who now seems to wear the albatross around her neck. After killing her ex-husband in self-defense last week she gets lucky when charges aren't brought up. But, she seems to be the one in a perpetually unhappy mood. I wouldn't mind this because, frankly, she isn't my favorite character on ER. Now that we're back into the normalcy of day-to-day emergency room operations maybe she'll even out.

This week we are introduced to John Stamos as intern Tony Gates. Wait, you say, wasn't he a paramedic when he appeared on ER last season? Why, yes he was, but he has been magically enrolled in medical school and will now be working beside Neela and Pratt. Now that doctors like Pratt and Morris seem to be settling into the roles of wizened senior physicians, it looks like Gates will become the Benton/Ross maverick for this season. I couldn't really gauge how he'll be from his appearances this week. However, it looks like he'll have a bigger role next episode. So, I'll save judgment until then.

What else? Well, it was really nice to see Sally Field return as Abby's mom, and not in the crazy way she was when first introduced way back in season seven. Fact of the matter is, this was her most supportive role as Abby's mom and her visit was a real turning point in the mother-daughter relationship. Plus, she brought a bit of levity to this episode, which was a change of pace from the darkness of the previous one.

One other thing before I leave you to bask in the happiness that is Abby. There have been past seasons where there have been so many doctors on the emergency room floor that a good portion of them didn't receive the character development they should have. This season there seems to be a slimmed down group full of established characters and only one new person (Tony Gates). Plus, we now get to see Kerry Weaver back in the ER as she is no longer the chief of staff. Being the most senior doctor there (she's been around since season two) Kerry will probably become the voice of reason as the season progresses.

Can someone explain why Kerry lost the Chief of Staff position? It's a mystery to me.
Thanks

"Graduation Day" is a fitting title for this episode. and the character who gets to graduate with honors is Kerry Weaver. Over the years we have seen Kerry stepping over more bodies than any other ER member: over Mark to become ER Chief; over Kim, Her first Lesbian lover, to stay in the safe, warm closet; Over Chen and Dave about the Marfan guy. It didn't make you like her, but I couldn't help but feeling sorry for that lonely woman who has nothing but work in her life and would do anything - and that means anything - to better her position in the food chain, or save herself from losing her job or the respect of her colleagues (respect, not love. Kerry seemed to have given all hope about that). But things have changed for Kerry. First she found out she was gay, and let heself fall in love for the first time in the show, probably in her life. Then Sandy came along and dragged Kerry's ass out of the closet (and behold! Kerry didn't lose the respect of her co-workers on this one. A major turning point for this woman). Henry's arrival turned Kerry into a mother, and Sandy's death into a single mom. Suddently work wasn't everything. After finding herself (and her birth-mother, I almost forgot), losing her wife, and facing the prospect of losing her son to Sandy's parents, Kerry is no longer to terrified workoholic control-freek that would sell out a friend and a new daddy to save her own skin.
Happy graduation day, Kerry!

Oh yeah, Clemente! I didn't even remember him!! It is kind of coming back to me now!! As for the age difference between Gates and Neela, well, that would be a large difference if she were only 20 or so, but she is probably around 30, has had a life altering tragedy, so a man in his early 40's wouldn't be that big of a deal. And especially one who looks like that! As for Abby, Luka, and Joe, I think they will kind of back off of their problems now for a while, let someone else be the main storyline for awhile. Hopefully, they won't age the baby like they do on soap operas or in a couple of years he could be in junior high!

This was a dreadful episode. It's like they brought in all new writers and they decided to distance themselves from all the current plotlines and tie them all up in a completely rushed and uninspired manner. It's like they read a book on dramatic writing and did everything they could to cut out every possible moment of interest (skipping over major confrontations between characters).

I'm hoping that now that they've divorced themselves from the previous plotlines they'll get on to some equally good new ones ... but I don't know how much longer I can wait for it to get interesting again.

Who didn't love Sally Field's reliving her Steel Magnolia's Screaming Mom at the Hospital Charactor?

I'm glad that many of you are enjoying new shows such as Ugly Betty and Shark. However, I feel that comparing them to the feel of ER is unfair. Since episode one of season one ER has always had darkness to it, mostly due to the environment that it is based on. Even though there are soap opera elements to it I feel that it shouldn't be compared to a show like Ugly Betty, which is a comedy based in the fashion world. I have no issues if you want to compare it to Grey's Anatomy since it is also a medical drama.

I started off the evening by watching Ugly Betty, which was WONDERFUL!!! It was the best show of the evening, IMO, with wit and charm and lots of humor.

Unfortunately, I ended the evening by watching ER.

ER used to be smart and charming, now it's just dark and depressing.

kerry's fired
abby's baby is sick and she's as bi**** as ever
she and her mom still argue
neela's depressed

and on and on and on

I've tried to stick with the current cast of characters, but as a group they've sucked the life out of the show.

I didn't realize how much until I saw something as vibrant as Ugly Betty.

Gates looks old enough to Abby's father. I thought this episode would have energy and excitement, but it just had arguing, moping, and more arguing.

I turned about 45 minutes into it and found that Shark is not as bad as I thought it would be.

Clemente had a nervous breakdown towards the end of last season. We last saw him being sent up to the psych ward muttering to himself. Frankly, I'm glad he didn't come back because that character just didn't fit with the rest of the cast.
