Rob Thomas on Veronica Mars Season 3

by Brett Love, posted Sep 29th 2006 7:30PM
Rob ThomasIt's down to just days until Veronica Mars is back solving mysteries and foiling bad guys. Unless you already watched the first episode online. Then you have a good eleven days to wait for more Neptune action. Either way, to quell your Veronica jones, have a gander at this interview with the show's creator, Rob Thomas, over at the TV addict.

Thomas talks about the new timeslot, the new lead-in, and why things are better being on the CW. They also talk about the change in format with season three being split into three separate arcs, as opposed to the season long plots the first two years. If you are trying to remain spoiler free, be warned. There are some minor spoilers toward the end of the article. Nothing earth shattering, just references to something you can expect to see in the first episode.

And if that isn't enough to get you to go read, let me remind you that this is the guy behind Cupid. Cupid! Good grief, what's it gonna take to get that thing released on DVD?

I agree. Last year the show really suffered because we weren't able to watch it continuously like now on dvd. I remember that one episode where they had previouslies for almost 5 minutes trying to catch up the viewers.

Cupid! I loved that show. I thought I was the only one watching it. No wonder I love Veronica Mars so much. :)

I agree, they aren't dumbing down the show, just making it easier to follow if they go on a three week break. Last season was great and I bet it's much better on DVD because you didn't suffer the long breaks between new episodes like the rest of us did. I remembered alot but not everything.

Everyone make sure you watch Tues night, lets get those ratings up for our girls.... GG and VM!

I wouldn't say they're dumbing down the show BGDC, its not like they're having a mystery with one suspect, but rather making it more accessible. If it works well and there are viewers galore, the bigger arcs may appear in season four.

Besides, theres only so many times a big year-long mystery can happen with it being believable. 24 is getting a bit silly; how often can one man have a very bad day?

Having seen the S3 Premier on MSN already, I am happy to say that I am completely optimistic about season 3. I wouldn't worry about it all.

I'm super pissed that they're dumbing down the show. Admittedly, I'm only 10 episodes into Season 2 but it's so much better than Season 1. The shere number of plots and subplots and references to the past are audacious and awesome. This is what TV can be: interesting, fun, engrossing.

My girlfriend and I are doing our best to keep VM viewing down to 1 to 1.5 episodes a week. We're going to Tivo Season 3. We figure at that rate we'll finish Season 2 and begin watching Season 3 before the end of the show's run (let's be frank Season 4 seems really iffy).

With the change to a simple 3 arc format the show loses much of its allure. Like other great shows that used the past to shape the future episodes (Freaks N Geeks, Arrested Development), part of what made Veronica special was that what happened mattered from episode to episode. Most shows - like all the brainless procedural shows (house, csi, law and order) - solved the issue of the week and moved on, the characters none-the-worse the next week. Sigh...
