Desperate Housewives: It Takes Two

by Jen Creer, posted Oct 1st 2006 10:40PM
Bree and Susan on Desperate Housewives(S03E02) Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't think Orson killed his wife. What do you think? I mean, seriously, he may be clean in a creepy way-- but so is Bree. The woman's body was not his missing wife's-- though he clearly knew the woman, based on his saying something to her and calling her "Monique" as he left the morgue.

So, is this another missing wife? Maybe, but we don't know that.

What do we know? Orson hit Mike with a car. Alma's parrot said, "No, Orson, no." Alma disappeared. Orson scrubbed the house with bleach. Laurie Metcalf is suspicious. And the woman's body was missing all her teeth-- and Orson is a dentist. None of that means anything. It's all circumstantial. None of that means that Orson is a murderer. But I think the writers are having a pretty good time setting up this trail of creepiness and placing Orson on it. And I'll admit that I'm having a pretty good time watching it.

The most hilarious part of this episode, though, of course, was when Gabrielle's and Carlos's baby was born... African American. Turns out Xiao Mei was implanted with the wrong embryo and theirs? Well, theirs didn't take. But of course, they'll end up getting back together now and will probably end up having a biological child. That is my prediction. Any takers?

I'm getting really sick of the Lynette/Tom/Nora storyline-- I wish Lynette would actually just become friends with her. I think the actress who plays Nora is terrific and that the character is actually pretty well-drawn, considering that she could be played as just a really obnoxious woman. But she obviously likes Lynette, and she may not be what Lynette wants in a friend, but she's a human being, and she is apparently not going away. Unless they can convince Orson to get rid of her.

You know, the writers are dancing as fast as they can to make Orson seem like a creepy killer, but is anybody else the least bit concerned about the charming Ian who lies to his wife's parents and tells them Susan is their daughter's new doctor and then won't take no for an answer when she tells him they can't date, and stalks her by showing up at the wedding, makes an inappropriate toast to try to connive her into dating him? The guy may be greatlooking (I love Dougray Scott) and charming and seem like a really swell and nice and romantic guy, but I think that he's the one we really need to be worried about. Not Orson.

"Tu me manques." means "I miss you." Period.

("Je te manques." doesn't exist in combinations with persons - only with things.
Actually, there is no direct translation to English. Well, if you want to translate it directly into English like that, it would be:
"You are missing/lacking TO me." ("to" best indicates the subsequent indirect object "me")
Europeen languages are more complicated than English.)

First of all it is not only African Americans who's race is identified by their background. Mexican American is also a very familiar term. I am indeed African American born in this country which has also idedtified my race using other terms in the past such as Negro and when that happened no one called us Negro Americans, we ourselves not wanting to lose our total African identity which was taken from us, and also wanted to embrace our right to be called Americans adopted a combination of the two names which is not an insult to our country America or our ancestral background. As for the baby being African American...Many Hispanic and other cultures have darker skin tones as do African Americans including Hispanic, some Italians, Indian etc...If I had been in the position of Carlos and Gabby and with their money that would have been an issue going to court. But for real this is TV land.

What I would have liked to see more of is a story line on the biological mother and child but they just seemed to disappear.

Actually you're both wrong about the "tu me manque"...it should be "Tu me manques" but anyways, it means You miss me... If it were I miss you, it'd be "je te manque"

Anyway, I'm wondering if the DH writers have changed. In the first season, something like this wouldn't have happened or the subject wouldn't have been breached this way. When the show first started, we didn't need all out debauchery for things to be funny, but it seems like the show has gotten more slapstick. I'm just waiting for some black child to be called a "monkey" and the Soulis' to be deported or something. Have they really lost all of their tact?

On a positive note, I WONDER if Orson really killed his 1st wife? I also heard, in "real life", Bree is pregnant.
:>)

I just started watching DH over the summer.
Frankly, I was very puzzled by the "black baby" birth.
I thought the baby was supposed to be the biological child of the asian girl and Carlos.
I thought that scene was done in very poor taste, particularly the implications of birthing a "black baby". (Oh my gawd .. what could be worse!!!?)
Frankly, I was shocked and somewhat offended.
So, now they don't want the baby because ... it's "black".
NOT good!
Isn't it ironic, I read somewhere that when Eva Longoria was born, she was very dark and hairy. She had some kind of nickname demeaning her appearance .. which was supposed to be negative.
I dunno ... I found that little "birth" scene, ODD and confusing.

I think its interesting how everyone is willing to get into an argument about race when that really wasn't the point of the show. Carlos and Gabby can't keep the baby because they don't have the right to. It's someone else's baby, and they want to be able to raise it. The baby being black, or African American, or whatever the politically correct term is today, was just part of the episode so they didn't end up raising the kid and then finding out later that it wasn't theirs. Although that would have been pretty interesting, it would have been too much like the situation w/ Lily.
I think the whole theory with Ian is interesting, I honestly never thought to suspect him of anything. I think Susan should still wait for Mike, tho. She moved on kinda quickly. The scene w/ the wedding toasts was so typically Susan, too. Poor Bree, her wedding was pretty messed up (um...did you kill your wife?) and I'm sure she expected it to be perfect. I loved her dress tho, and the bridesmades dresses were pretty (the second batch.)

Sorry Catie, but "Tu me manques Monique" really means "I miss you Monique".

To Simone....11th entry. Think you missed the whole point. Has nothing to do with what you said. Dont you find it a little curious as to why the baby wasnt paired with either "parent?." Of course they have a right to know the backround. Would've been the same reaction had the baby been white, indian, etc. As neither of the parents are. And, Jolies kids were adopted by total strangers, and neither her or Brad were the bilogical parent, so, that's pretty much a no brainer. If one of them had been the natural parent, they would've had the same reaction, just like anyone else in the world would. Maybe I am missing something, but, I just didnt pick up on racism at all.If Im wrong, then I stand corrected.
Also, think in this day and age we've all pretty much established if you were born in this country you are AMERICAN. One's backround, and/ethnics/nationality has nothing to do with where you were born. If you were born in the US of A.......than thats what you are, American, then the proper nationality, religion, etc to follow. As to all the "african american" I just dont get it. My children, hubby, and myself (all born here) are Italian and Irish. Shall we start saying we are European Ireland American? No, we are all American, of italian and irish nationalities. (Damn, I will be humiliated if this doesnt make any sense)...the hell with it, I'm sending it anyway. If I'm wrong, someone.....please, educate me!!!!
Thanks,
Marie
