Peter Falk says that he provided Columbo's raincoat
Anyone over the age of 35 has probably caught at least one epsiode of Columbo. It has to be one of the most complete characterizations in TV history; everything from his manner of speaking to his crappy car, tan suit and rumpled raincoat tells you that Columbo wasn't your average cop. Must have been some genius costume designer working his or her magic, right? Not according to Peter Falk.
Falk told The Saginaw News that the costume designers showed him stylish clothes to wear before the series of TV-movies debuted in 1971. He told them to take one suit and dye it brown, then grabbed an old raincoat from his closet used that for the role, too. He also chose the crappiest car on the lot, a beaten-up Peugeot, even though he had his choice of any car there. He also mentions how he ad-libbed much of Columbo's fumbling for notes or a piece of paper, and how a replacement brought in to play the gumshoe's dog took too long to get his makeup done.
Amazing. I can't even imagine Lt. Columbo in anything else besides that raincoat and that old car, but the fact that those decisions were made by Falk himself makes the job he did with the role all the more remarkable.
