Battlestar Galactica: Occupation / Precipice (season premiere)

battlestar galactica hashes
(S03E01/S03E02) I felt like Col. Tigh this summer, making hash marks on a dirty cell wall, waiting for the new season to finally start. 134 days on New Caprica, according to Roslin. Right off the bat you had to be excited as hell for this episode. The haunting music, the quick shots of people we can't quite make out ... and some we can make out pretty well. Saul, as we see, has come under some pretty tough times, sporting not only some significant facial hair but also a patch, as he's sans one eye. And as it seems, he's also sans wife, though he doesn't know it quite yet.

tighIt's the scene with Saul's wife, Ellen, that made me spoil to you weeks ago that I felt this was pretty clear proof that she is not a Cylon, one yet to be revealed to us. You've got to admit she was suspicious ever since she reappeared, though it seems it's not due to being a toaster. We see later how clearly she loves her husband and at what cost she'll go through to make sure he's no longer harmed.

battlestar galacticaIt's one hell of a creepy atmosphere, here on New Caprica. Starbuck also seems to be one forced to be fraking a Cylon, and one has to wonder how many times she's "killed" him, only to have him come back every time.

The Cylons clearly have a few agendas in mind, one in particular being forcing the Humans to believe in only one god. Brother Cavill wants to take an approach that's very hard handed, suggesting even to start mass executions. Though you had to love his first idea, to kill Baltar as a way of getting the masses to comply. The more intelligent of the bunch quickly shoot that down. Speaking of Baltar, it's also funny (though understandable) how much the Humans want that slime dead.

An odd observation ... I wonder what the Cylons do to dispose of all those dead versions of themselves. Leoben just stepping over his old shell was just surreal.

fat apollo134 days have done more than change New Caprica. Adama's still got his 'stache and Apollo has gained so much weight that his own father calls him a "fat ass." It's another surreal moment as we scan over the empty hallways and flight decks of Galactica, which in the previous season was teeming with guys and gals ready to put the smack down on the Cylons.

What's perhaps more surprising to see is how much Adama confides in Sharon, sitting alone with her and discussing things he may have only talked about with Tigh. This is a version of a woman who tried to kill him a season ago, and now it's his best friend.

The best tense moment of the episode comes when Baltar's talked into not attending the police graduation ceremony, one where he was clearly going to be offed. I'm not sure if I should've easily guessed that Gaeta was the one helping the insurgents with inside info, but it made the most sense. Another intense group of scenes here.

What made all of the police officers want to take on those jobs? Did the Cylons really convince them that they'd be looked upon as heroes in the future? They're caving in to the Cylons and are going against their friends and families. There's hell to pay for that when Galactica comes back for their rescue mission and people have some explaining to do. And Tyrol's going to be there first, making those nooses tight.

battlestar galacticaNow for the biggest shocker of the episode: Kacey. Did Leoben really use one of Starbuck's ovaries to make a child between them? And supposedly the birth mother, the one who carried Kacey to term, died in childbirth. Was it really that simple? Right away Starbuck reacts to the child as a "thing," something that couldn't possibly be considered human. It doesn't matter how cute the kid is -- to Starbuck she's a toaster. Later we see how quickly this changes as what seems like the unbelievable might happen -- that Starbuck might fall for a Cylon.

A side note -- was it just me or was that scream Kacey gave out when she fell on the stairs one of the most frighteningly weird things you'd ever heard? Holy hell, that was not human.

It's great to hear the mention of the search for Earth again. I'd been afraid before that maybe that part of the story would be pushed aside too easily.

baltarWith all the suicide bombings going on, the Cylons resort to the only thing they can think of to get everyone in line -- round up the insurgents and just kill them all. What's interesting here is how the Cylons are actually afraid of their god, that they'll have to carry the burden of killing them all and need Baltar's signature to say it's all OK. Baltar retreats into that safe place beside the Number Six in his mind, who tells him to sign the order so that he can fight another day. I can only hope that this means in a future episode we'll really see him come forth and do something to make himself worthy of being a Human.

battlestar galacticaSharon coming back into the fleet is another surprise development. One has to wonder how the rest of the Humans will react to that once everyone is reunited, though already the insurgent group seems quick to accept the news. Hey, these guys are desperate to get the hell off that planet, so whatever Adama says is just fine with them.

Finally, the unbelievable cliffhanger ending. Is the Sharon with the insurgents the cause of the ambush on them? Are the writers actually crazy enough to mass kill so many main characters to the series? Is it possible at all that they can actually get out of this? Could I sound any more like a corny radio announcer at tne end of a serial? Stay tuned!

Science fiction has always, always been about putting the real life events into a new light to get people to think about the human condition. I don't think it matters whether it's a parallel to Baghdad or Berlin -- what matters is that people question war, torture, and our motivations for what we do.

"Lucas", do us all a favor and apply some actual after-thought before trying to stand on your little soap box. If Battlestar Galactica is so anti-American and pro-Muslim Fanatics, why are the Cylons - aka BAD GUYS - depicted as religious extremists? Why would the genocide against the 12 colonies be a parallel to 9/11? Wow, you see one episode where humans use terrorist tactics instead of the Cylons and suddenly BSG is anti-American. Great argument.

docrmc: I'm with you all the way. The worst part? I have to fly across the country to suprise my father for his 50th birthday, and won't be able to catch Friday's episode until I return on Sunday.

I mean, I love the guy and all, but this is Battlestar Galatica :)

Anyone else notice that Brother Cavill and Adama both have a similar speech about irony. Interesting.

This show's appeal is the same a the original "Star Trek"'s in that Star Trek took universal themes and left us viewers make the connection.BSG is taking us a bit more into more current events, while Star Trek dealt with human rights, civil rights, etc...

Lucas: Here is a prime example of how people hear what they want to. You heard anti-aemrican propoganda. I heard.. both sides of every argument given. e.g. baltar/jammer/cheif - suicide bombers? are u nuts? tigh - done it before, do it again. theyve no boundaries and neither can we. roslyn - they deserver what they get.. still, i cant exactly condone it. so..wheres the slant? and, to take tigh's meaning (and Dorv's), u really get the impression that the current Iraqi war is the only time in history these matters have come up, and have been written abt? come on. dont be so shortsighted.

Eps. opinions: I supposed i should have started here first, but some people just get me going, out of order. My impression? Loved it. Flat out, loved it. It is indeed back. If i had to pick one moment in it all - and that is no difficult task - it would be the "Cylon Occupational Authority" lines. Brilliant. Boy am I glad Lucy Lawless is a model.

Civilian Gov't: The phrase "to have the uneviable task of" comes to mind, every time i see Baltar. Everyone wants to shoot him, including him. But most of the precipitating events of this tragedy, while they can be attributed to Baltar, were not of his design. A fact that may not spare him. Frankly, the only thing that may is if he is a model. That is the only other sleeper model storyline that i may be willing to swallow, this season.

Ellen: Not a Cylon, not a slut, but a whore. Clearly, this is a barter situation. :)

The Custodians: what could such men be thinking? Just what Jammer said. Id rather guard my own than let the toasters do it. Would i be hated by those who dont get that? Yes. Would i do it anyway? Yes. Would i be secretly helpin the resistance? Yes. Would i be more likely caught than the actual resistance members? Quite possibly.

Helo: i dont like agathon as it is, but at least i could look at him. why did they go and make him unattractive?!! damn hair.

Apollo: in my webisoding extravaganza, i was (by the 50th time the word could only be) subjected to that soppy promo, talkin abt regrettin choices made. in this promo shot, he is his usual ripped self, and hugging D. having seen the ep and knowin that theyve been married, the regret of what i think weve solved. whatever the case, there is a whole lot more to come from Com. Adama

Tattoo: a small thing that id like to address rite here.. circles, in _most_ arenas/cultures deals with interconnectivity, continuity, infinity. Given that, i saw it and largely dismissed it. They got married. And trust Starbuck not to have a traditional "ring". Should i ever get married, id tattoo mine on :P

Starbuck: First, let me say to whomever it was that claimed she couldnt act, please jut forwad ur chin so that i might bitchslap u.... Any1 else was OMMG'ing when she picked up the knife, cut her meat (herself), and displayed generally wonderful table ettiquete, while wholly bloody? this time around, i *simply claps*. cant exactly jump out my seat at work....

Now, onto the "Kara is frak[k]ing a Cylon" commentary. Is she? I dont recall evidence of that, but of course, i swooned several times in that episode (or so i shall call it, b/c there are patches in my memory.) She has been improsined by Leoben, yes. But the impression i got is that he wishes Kara to give herself to him, wholly. In which case, forcing himself upon her would be a bad way to go abt it, ya think? Casey, however, is an excellent way to go abt it.

Having said the above, do i believe that i witnessed her caving in those final scenes? No. No.. i dont believe it. Maybe this is colored by my own feelings, but i dont think so. Cause it happened too damn fast, in my scheme of things. She has been gone over 4 months now, and 4 months of this kind of psychological torture might do it. But still i feel that the Starbuck character ive come to understand should suspect the same thing i do... Leoben is behind Casey's accident. In which case, he is a dead dead ducky. That kinda dead takes more plannin and foresight than a knife at dinner. It mite take something less subtle, like say, a little touch, or to borrow a phrase from 'Chasing Amy', a shared moment, or two.

...then kill the sucker. kill them all! near the end of the season...

Now, its wednesday, and there is nothing to this week but waiting for friday. Anxious, sweaty-palms waiting. BSG has managed to do that to me again. Its back alright. Its so back i wonder... why is it not yet here? *looks at the clock*

Nick said: Also, should I watch the webisodes? I mean, I watched The Office ones and felt like they were really stupid (and I love The Office) so I just decided not to waste my time with these.

You definitely should watch the webisodes! And not watching them before you saw the premiere will matter not a bit. They will just be like the flashbacks that are sure to inundate the show for the next few episodes. And I found they greatly added to my getting familiar with the whole occupation plotline.

I loved everything about this premiere!! From the opening scene w/ Dean Stockwell in sunglasses(SWEET), peering into the camera. He justs keeps gettin cooler and cooler the more scenes hes' in.
Tigh looking the supreme bad-ass----He has so many great scenes of dialogue.
"...showed it to me. Looked like a hard boiled egg." That is a great line!!!

Leoben: "I'll see you soon, Kara"
Starbuck: "Take your time."
And then she sits back down for a bite. Priceless.

Besides going on and on about the BRILLIANT writing and acting in this episode, I'll end with this observation. I thought the production value was top-notch. I was really impressed w/ the shots of the occupation camp/tent city. At the end of season 2, it sort of looked like a "rush-job" with what the producers wanted. Now, w/ 7 months to prep(and a bigger budget from SciFi), it looked like a convincing "lived-in" setting. One shot I really liked was Lucy Lawless walking through the camp at night, centurions in the background, ships flying overhead, towards Colonial One(w/Roslin voiceover). And how many people thought we would see so many same model Cylons interracting in the same scene? It surprised me how seamless the FX was between Stockwell clones.
Galactica gets its praise for its brilliant writing and acting(and thats where it should be placed), but I just want to give some praise to a part of the show not many comment on.

I think the parallels to both current actions in Iraq and Vichy France and any occupying force in our history is clear in the show. It is not specific at all. Thinking the show is "anti-american" is just ridiculous.

Dorv, for once (as I said before) I tend to agree with everything you have said. I guess we will have to wait til next episode to disagree ;) However, I disagree about Sharon being in charge of the mission. Too much at stake? Sure. I am not a bent over backwards Sharon lover as some are but she has proven herself again and again to save the fleet. Plus, she has the piloting and command experience to get the job done.

Actually, I am beginning to like Zarek. I think he may even become one of the good guys in the colony. If you noticed, Roslin seemed to attribute an atitude of respect when they were being herded up at episodes end. Hey...at least he did not collaborate with the cylons! As long as he leaves Boomer and Sharon alone he's alright by me.
