Why did Vanished kill off its main character?

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 6th 2006 11:34AM
vanishedThis week, the low-rated Fox drama Vanished made a surprise move by killing off its lead character, Det. Kelton (played by Gale Harold). It was only seven episodes into its first season. Why would they do that? Was it because ratings were so low? Or, because of reports that Harold was reportedly a bit of a prima donna on set? The producer, Josh Berman, says no and no.

In an interview with TV Guide's Ausiello, Berman says it was their way of "thinking outside the box", a directive from Fox when they started the show. He said he and the writers realized that Kelton was getting closer than they planned to solving the mystery of the missing Sara Collins, so it was time for him to die. Berman also says that Harold was pumped about his character's death and even suggested the scene where his estranged wife gives back his wedding ring as a way to wrap up that subplot. The new lead detective on the show is Det. Danny Lucas, played by Eddie Cibrian. Berman also said a lot of the mystery about Collins' disappearance will be wrapped up by the 13th episode, as the show has not yet received an order for a full season. If it does, Berman has plans for new plot lines.

Now it's time for the Vanished fans to chime in: Was killing off Det. Kelton a good or a bad move?

Bad move for the show! After his death was confirmed on this second to last episode, all I kept asking, was why did they get rid of Kelton? He played a compelling character, and really made the story intriguing, as other commentators mention above. Gale Harold really rounded out this story in a captivating way, and the loss of his character leaves a huge hole in the storyline. I am really disappointed that Fox fired him; it is detrimental to the show's success. It was an interesting story, albeit somewhat unbelievable in reality, but this is entertainment after all.

When something isn't broke, don't fix it!

Also, a very bad move to move it to Friday...It was a very interesting show. I can honestly say, one of the very few intruiging shows on TV. I hope they bring Agent Kelton back somehow...

Brilliant move as Harold looked and acted like horse's ass. But now the series is really doomed as I haven't yet seen any series survive with Eddie Cibrian.. not sure why, though.

But it's funny how shocked you all are. You should watch the BBC series called 'Spooks' or MI-5. Now there's a series where ANYONE can die..and yet the series can stay good.

Really bad move! I was only watching the show for Gale Harold. I loved him on Queer as Folk and was so excited that I would be able to watch him in another series. I'm removing "Vanished" from my Season Pass Manager on my TiVo - what's the point in watching now? I wasn't watching to see what happened to Sara Collins!!!!!

I think it was a terrible idea, I was hoping somehow it was all a set up!! and he would be alive, without noone knowing, that way he can really keep investigating!!!

Killing off this main character made me not wanna watch it anymore.....

Hope you guys have better ideas to make this show as good as it was!!!

Good luck

I think it was a HORRIBLE idea to kill off Gale Harold's character so early in the season. The excuse they gave is total BS!! I'm not watching this show anymore. The writers need to find themselves a new job cause they are losing their audience and they'll probably get fired soon.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
The new FBI agent stinks! He is just eye candy.
I hope the FBI is only pretending Graham Kelton is dead to trick the kidnappers and they will bring him back...Otherwise this show is dead to me.

It was an absolutely terrible idea. We didn't get time to even get acquainted with Gale Harold's character and his complex background story. He was the only decent actor on the show and the only reason I watched. Fox then puts the show on Friday night, guaranteeing that nobody will watch and the show will die of terminally low ratings. I'm done with Vanished as of now.
