Cast of The Office reads Jenna Fischer's article -- VIDEO

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 7th 2006 12:57PM
steve carellJenna Fischer, who plays Pam on The Office, recently had an article published in Esquire magazine listing "10 Things You Don't Know About Women". The cast and crew of The Office decided to get together and have a reading of it... and it's on YouTube. The guy who shot and edited it did so on his telephone and he's calling it a phone-isode.

Hi Jen! I'm the one who wrote the comment at Gawker. My point wasn't that Jenna Fischer isn't capable of writing an article all by herself -- I'm sure she is. But Esquire runs one of these pieces every month, each time under the name of a different female celebrity, and they all end up sounding pretty much the same.

What often happens when a magazine runs an article like this is that they'll ask the celebrity for her ideas, then fill it out with the sort of language and humor they think their male readers would like to hear. (If they do a good job, it will end up sounding more or less like the celebrity's own "voice.") Then they'll run it by her (and her publicist) for changes and final approval. If the process goes well, then you end up with a fun article like this one that both the magazine and the celebrity are happy with.

Of course, there are also times -- and I'm definitely not saying that's what happened in this case -- when an article credited to a celebrity is entirely written by the magazine's staff, and they're lucky if they can even get him or her to read it before it goes to press.

I loved this. I thought it was great. Jenna Fischer went to college in the town where I live, and I know people who went to school with her. I think, based on her alternate careers as cartoonist and screenwriter/director, plus given the guy she's married to (James Gunn) that it is entirely likely that she wrote the Esquire article herself-- though there was a comment at Gawker that questioned this.
