The Five: Shows to watch forever

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 9th 2006 8:44AM
Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van DykeThis is a list of the TV shows I could never live without. If I was able to own and watch only five TV shows on DVD (or tape), these are the five shows. My desert islands discs, as they call them.

The interesting thing to me about this list is that these five shows are NOT my five favorite TV shows of all-time. They're in the top 10, sure, but I found making that list that I know only looked at the ones I liked, the quality, but since these were the only five shows I could have (and I'm trapped on that damn island - hope there's electricity), then I'd want a mix of shows to entertain me. A balance of comedy and drama.

What shows would you pick? Remember, you can never watch any other shows ever again.

1. The Dick Van Dyke Show: OK, so the first show on my list just so happens to also be my favorite TV show of all-time. This show is timeless, it's extremely well done, and Rob Petrie is the reason I became a writer, so it has to be number one.

2. The Twilight Zone: For real life writing heroes (as opposed to ones who work for a fictional Alan Brady and are married to Mary Tyler Moore), Rod Serling is the man, and this show wasn't just a sci-fi show, it was quality drama and social commentary. So many great episodes, so many great writers, so many great guest stars, it's like the history of television in one set.

3. Warner Brothers cartoons: What, you think I could go without cartoons? A world without Bugs, Daffy, and The Road Runner is a sad world indeed.

4. The Simpsons: Not just one of the best cartoons of all-time, one of the smartest social and pop culture satire too. This is like the history of TV and culture from the late 80s. What a treasure trove to dip into this would be!

5. The West Wing: I get it all with this show: the politics of the day, a fantastic cast, and one of the best writers in TV history, Aaron Sorkin.

Boy this is a tough one. So many excellent shows to choose from. Bob, the picks you and the other commenters made were just fine but if I HAD to choose, these would be my picks:
1, Battlestar Galactica (Hands down because of the gifted Grace Park).
2. The original "Outer Limits"
3. Dark Shadows
4. The Fugitive
5. The Andy Griffith Show (first five seasons)

Honorable mentions: Original Star Trek and Enterprise

The Cosby Show - A show that saved the sitcom format and a show you might not always laugh out loud at but will put a smile on your face.

DALLAS - One of the best TV characters ever created, J.R. Ewing. Watching that bastard will make you love him and hate him every time.

The Price Is Right - The same plot every episode yeah but not many shows can make you yell at a Grandmother from Iowa for losing a sports car because she got the price of a can of corn wrong.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Only 12 minutes long and not as many episodes as The Simpsons but I just can't go through the rest of my life without Meatwad, Carl, and Boxy Brown.

Guiding Light - I grew up watching the evil Roger Thorpe and the scandalous Reva Shayne. And like a previous poster said I'm going to have time to kill. 54 years on TV, 69 all together (first 15 on radio), over 15,000 episodes.

ugh could you imagine having the West Wing to watch for the rest of your life?? Haha

1. Andy Griffith Show (black and white only)- One of the best written shows ever.

2. X-files- So many classic Sci-Fi episodes.

3. The Wire- Greatest police drama of our time.

4. The Shield- Second greates police drama of our time.

5. Family Guy- Would take this over Simpsons anyday.

Another one I would add to the list (as one of the younger generation...)

Friends - Sure, it hasn't been around for very long, but I still watch both old and new episodes and still laugh and still quote the best lines. They're classics for the 90s era.

My list-

The Twilight Zone - The best in writing. Irony, humor, and at times, heart-touching.

Babylon 5 - Certainly the first three seasons. The latter portion of #4 was too rushed for my taste, and the final season was merely an afterthought. But a compelling story throughout, and the way Star Trek should have been.

The Carol Burnett Show - The comedy sketches, insane movie parodies ("Went with the Wind"), wonderful guest stars, and the best ensemble cast ever.

The Andy Griffith Show - Simpler times, simpler pleasures. Aunt Bea, Andy Taylor, Barney Fife, Floyd, Lloyd, and all the rest. Morality play? yes. But great TV.

The Wonderful World of Disney - The animation, the live action stories, and the documentary pieces. Heroes, villians, fantasy and reality. Views of fabled Disneyland and Walt's personal intros. May we never forget our youth.

What about Seinfeld? That is one sitcom I will never tire of.

And Tom And Jerry was one of the greatest cartoons too. I could watch those all day.

Firefly - I'd take a hit on the length of the series, but I couldn't imagine not choosing Firefly, so that would be my first choice.

Seinfeld - Still my favorite comedy of all time. After all these years I still enjoy watching the reruns.

Beggars and Choosers - The best show Showtime ever made.

The Next Generation - My favorite of the Star Trek franchise.

Guiding Light - I've never actually even seen an episode. But I'm on a desert island with nothing but time to kill, so I might as well have 60-odd years worth of new to me episodes to watch.
