Super O'Reilly Brothers

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 10th 2006 10:31AM

super marioEveryone has to start somewhere, and long before Bill O'Reilly made a name for himself on Fox News cutting mics, gesticulating toward the camera and telling people to shut up, he was the host of Inside Edition and getting to the bottom of this strange new phenomenon called Super Mario Brothers. College Humor has the video, and a very youthful Billy bookmarks the segment. The stuff in between is typical Inside Edition pabulum, though I was actually one of those nerds who would call the Nintendo hotline to figure out how to complete different levels. Nintendo was about as far as I ever went, though. If you were to sit me down in front of a PlayStation or an Xbox I'd probably start crying from not being able to figure anything out.

Hey, e_nick, don't sweat it, it's all good. The "kiss and make up" part sounds great, but only if I get to dress up like a secretary and have you chase me around a desk a few times first. That's how we make up in Minnesota. Seriously, it's on the state charter.

Adam,

I don't know if you read these comments after they've been pushed back a few pages, but I hope you do since this is the most appropriate and public place I can think of to say this to you.

I want to apologize for what was clearly an overreaction on my part. What you said about O'Reilly was in no way partisan and I jumped on you, um, erroneously. (That in no way discounts my earlier contention that there's always snide comments at every mention of Fox News or conservatives, but that's beside the point.)

What I wanted to do here is let you, and everyone reading this, know that after "sleeping on it", I realized I was wrong to snap at you about what you wrote. You said to me, "That's how I'm wired...", and the silly thing is I'm wired pretty much the same way, too. So there's also irony in my earlier outrage because I'm just as prone to be a "smartass", (I mean that in a good way, honestly) in fact, maybe more.

So in a nutshell, I was an erroneous, raging hypocrite with regards to my comments directed at you.

I hope you can accept my apology and that maybe one day we can kiss and make up...I just hope you don't have a moustache or halitosis.

The problem is that e_nick and mike are defining "liberal" as "anyone who isn't conservative."

Fox News IS conservative, it's a shill for the Republican party. These things are demonstrable. Pointing that out doesn't define one as liberal, just as someone who finds Fox News obnoxious.

Nick,

I hope you stick around as a TV Squad reader. If you leave, you'll miss our "Keith Olbermann Week" we have coming up! All Keith Olbermann posts all week long: interviews with him, reviews of his show, recipes from Keith (he makes a chili that is simpley *incredible*), and a contest where people send in their favorite Keith memories or drawings of Keith.

Like I said before, I don't like "start something" and I usually don't (although this case was a glaring exception), but the incessant sniping at Fox news and conservatives has taken "beating a dead horse" to a whole new level. In fairness, it hasn't been from you guys at TVSquad, just from commenters.

My anger may have been misplaced, but my point about the constant liberal whining/sniping is still correct. For the record, I don't think the TVSquad leans perceptively in either direction.

e_nick -- For someone who hates people who start conflict, your first comment seems quite contradictory of yourself.

Like Adam says, the bloggers here have differing opinions and we don't all get together and talk about who we're all going to hate/like every week. If we have more posts leaning left/right than right/left, that's just how it goes. I'm not going to hire people just because we're leaning too far one way.

Adam,

Agreeing to disagree is fine, but browse articles on this site about Fox news and CNN and show me one time that something disparaging about conservatives/Fox was *not* said without any provocatoin, then show me one time the same thing happened about CNN. You'll find instigation of snide remarks coming from the liberal side and mainly responses coming from the conservatives. It gets old and my fuse has grown considerably shorter with such predictable behavior.
