Dancing with the Stars: Week 5
(S03E09) And we're back for week 5 of Voting With the Entertaining Stars. We've got 90 minutes of airtime to get out the numbers for voting, so why don't we kill the time by having our stars dance. Don't worry, the dancing doesn't have to factor into the voting at all. Really. Yes, I'm growing a little cynical with the scoring system for the show. I think it hurts what is otherwise a good show. And now the judges are just adding to that problem, but more on that later. This week the stars are choosing between the samba and the rumba. With a couple notable exceptions, there has been some great improvement among the celebrities. It made for a pretty impressive show overall. My apologies for the lack of screencaps this week, my PVR ate the file. That said, on with the show.
Joey & Edyta - They choose to do the samba. I thought this was another really good performance. Barring the voting shenanigans, I think things should still come down to a Joey/Mario showdown in the end, although Willa could factor in. The judges aren't really impressed. Len thinks Joey lacks spontaneity. Bruno says something about George Michael and the Village People on a cruise to Brazil. I have no idea what he is talking about. And Carrie brings up that she saw a lot of mistakes. Kind of harsh. The scores, 8 - 8 - 9. I think that the first slot curse continues.
Willa & Maksim - Willa claims that this week, with the rumba, we are back to sexy Willa. I'll give her that one. She danced very well and it was a very sexy performance. The judges are much nicer about this number. Carrie compliments the pair's chemistry. Len and Bruno both praise Willa's improvement over the course of the show. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. Fair enough, but I didn't see this as being any better than Joey & Edyta.
Sara & Tony - We didn't get to see the whole national anthem performance, but I wasn't really impressed with what we did see. I was curious to see what would happen with this one. With the fan backing, Sara really has potential to go far if she dances remotely well. I thought this was just ok. She did the steps and moved around to where she was supposed to. But really, she's just a step below the other stars. In the middle when Tony did his thing, she just kind of disappeared. The judges are all positive, and I'm left scratching my head. How do they hammer on Joey & Edyta and then just give Sara & Tony a free pass? The scores, 8 - 8 - 8. Really?
Mario & Karina - These two are fantastic again. And Mario shows just what I mean about what Sara is lacking. He's doing spins and really working to be up to the level of his partner. As gorgeous as Karina is in her red dress, and as great as she dances, Mario still commands attention. The judges like it. Len takes a backhanded shot at Joey for some reason. Carrie criticizes Mario's movements for not being crisp. Clearly they are now grading on a curve. How can she find something to bitch about with Joey and Mario, but not Sara? Good grief. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9.
Jerry & Kym - Kym sums it up perfectly with "The samba is everything Jerry isn't." I'll give Jerry credit for giving it everything he has. The guy is clearly working hard. But at the end of the day, the dancing just isn't very good. And amazingly Carrie can't find one bad thing to say about this. Len looks forward to Jerry more than any other dancer. And Bruno adds something insane about Brazil nuts at the copa cabana. The scores, 8 - 8 - 8. You gotta be freaking kidding me.
Monique & Louis - I thought this was the best chemistry for these two so far. And Monique really danced well. The crazy fast footwork, the spins, and that amazing split at the end were all very impressive. The judges like it. Bruno compares her arms to wings and loves her fluidity. Carrie, again, decides to take a shot at one of the better dancers. The hell? Len is also very impressed. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. I like that score.
Emmitt & Cheryl - Ya know, I watch some of the bloodiest gore you can imagine, but what really freaks me out is chiropractors. That scene made me cringe. As far as the dancing, I have to say, this was a pretty impressive performance by Emmitt. He did some dancing out there. Lost of fast feet, spins, and shaking all over. That was a very fun number. And it gets back to what made him such a hit early on in the season. The judges love it. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. I can see that.
This was a weird night that left me confused. Now, the fan vote I get. If someone is a Sara Evans fan, of course they are going to vote as many times as they can for her. They want to see as much of her as possible. It screws with the results of the show, but it's to be expected. What I just don't get are these three "judges." And I put that in quotes because I'm calling into question whether the term should actually be used to describe them. How Len and Carrie can defend the fact that they gave Jerry and Sara the same score they gave Joey I have no idea. The two of them are clearly a step below the rest of the competition. Maybe two.
My favorite tonight - Monique & Louis
Going home - I really want Jerry to go home, but he might have the votes to squeak by again. I think it comes down to him or Monique, unfortunately. It should be an interesting result.
