Dancing with the Stars: Week 5

by Brett Love, posted Oct 11th 2006 7:17AM
Dancing with the Stars(S03E09) And we're back for week 5 of Voting With the Entertaining Stars. We've got 90 minutes of airtime to get out the numbers for voting, so why don't we kill the time by having our stars dance. Don't worry, the dancing doesn't have to factor into the voting at all. Really. Yes, I'm growing a little cynical with the scoring system for the show. I think it hurts what is otherwise a good show. And now the judges are just adding to that problem, but more on that later.

This week the stars are choosing between the samba and the rumba. With a couple notable exceptions, there has been some great improvement among the celebrities. It made for a pretty impressive show overall. My apologies for the lack of screencaps this week, my PVR ate the file. That said, on with the show.

Joey & Edyta - They choose to do the samba. I thought this was another really good performance. Barring the voting shenanigans, I think things should still come down to a Joey/Mario showdown in the end, although Willa could factor in. The judges aren't really impressed. Len thinks Joey lacks spontaneity. Bruno says something about George Michael and the Village People on a cruise to Brazil. I have no idea what he is talking about. And Carrie brings up that she saw a lot of mistakes. Kind of harsh. The scores, 8 - 8 - 9. I think that the first slot curse continues.

Willa & Maksim - Willa claims that this week, with the rumba, we are back to sexy Willa. I'll give her that one. She danced very well and it was a very sexy performance. The judges are much nicer about this number. Carrie compliments the pair's chemistry. Len and Bruno both praise Willa's improvement over the course of the show. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. Fair enough, but I didn't see this as being any better than Joey & Edyta.

Sara & Tony - We didn't get to see the whole national anthem performance, but I wasn't really impressed with what we did see. I was curious to see what would happen with this one. With the fan backing, Sara really has potential to go far if she dances remotely well. I thought this was just ok. She did the steps and moved around to where she was supposed to. But really, she's just a step below the other stars. In the middle when Tony did his thing, she just kind of disappeared. The judges are all positive, and I'm left scratching my head. How do they hammer on Joey & Edyta and then just give Sara & Tony a free pass? The scores, 8 - 8 - 8. Really?

Mario & Karina - These two are fantastic again. And Mario shows just what I mean about what Sara is lacking. He's doing spins and really working to be up to the level of his partner. As gorgeous as Karina is in her red dress, and as great as she dances, Mario still commands attention. The judges like it. Len takes a backhanded shot at Joey for some reason. Carrie criticizes Mario's movements for not being crisp. Clearly they are now grading on a curve. How can she find something to bitch about with Joey and Mario, but not Sara? Good grief. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9.

Jerry & Kym - Kym sums it up perfectly with "The samba is everything Jerry isn't." I'll give Jerry credit for giving it everything he has. The guy is clearly working hard. But at the end of the day, the dancing just isn't very good. And amazingly Carrie can't find one bad thing to say about this. Len looks forward to Jerry more than any other dancer. And Bruno adds something insane about Brazil nuts at the copa cabana. The scores, 8 - 8 - 8. You gotta be freaking kidding me.

Monique & Louis - I thought this was the best chemistry for these two so far. And Monique really danced well. The crazy fast footwork, the spins, and that amazing split at the end were all very impressive. The judges like it. Bruno compares her arms to wings and loves her fluidity. Carrie, again, decides to take a shot at one of the better dancers. The hell? Len is also very impressed. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. I like that score.

Emmitt & Cheryl - Ya know, I watch some of the bloodiest gore you can imagine, but what really freaks me out is chiropractors. That scene made me cringe. As far as the dancing, I have to say, this was a pretty impressive performance by Emmitt. He did some dancing out there. Lost of fast feet, spins, and shaking all over. That was a very fun number. And it gets back to what made him such a hit early on in the season. The judges love it. The scores, 9 - 9 - 9. I can see that.

This was a weird night that left me confused. Now, the fan vote I get. If someone is a Sara Evans fan, of course they are going to vote as many times as they can for her. They want to see as much of her as possible. It screws with the results of the show, but it's to be expected. What I just don't get are these three "judges." And I put that in quotes because I'm calling into question whether the term should actually be used to describe them. How Len and Carrie can defend the fact that they gave Jerry and Sara the same score they gave Joey I have no idea. The two of them are clearly a step below the rest of the competition. Maybe two.

My favorite tonight - Monique & Louis

Going home - I really want Jerry to go home, but he might have the votes to squeak by again. I think it comes down to him or Monique, unfortunately. It should be an interesting result.

Keeping Jerry on the show when he so obviously wants to leave is hurtful to the other dancers who are working so hard to stay.He did what he wanted to do- learn a waltz to do at his daughter's wedding. I hope KYm gave them lessons together because show time dancing is different than actual at the reception dancing.
Sara is improving whenever she does the quicker, happier dances. As Len pointed out, there are some dances that just don't suit her. She is a weak link, but I like seeing her progress each week. She dances too carefully. She only time she let herself go at all was the week her boots were doing the walking! Once Jerry goes, Sara should be next.
I think Emmit is doing great- I love watching him! He is really working. I think he will make the final 3. Last week he was caught counting as he danced, this week he just shook it up and enjoyed himself! It showed!
Mario's dimples and his sweet, unassuming attitude pull votes. What's with the priest's blessing thing? How much is real? How much is showmanship? He is fun to watch, and the dimples are to die for! He has really shown a lot of dancing growth and is doing a great job.
I don't believe that Joey hasn't danced since he was 5. He is too good at it. For that reason, I vote for a Mario finish and not a Joey.
The girl in the ostrich butt skirt(Monique)was excellent this week. WOW! That near flip was something! She also improves each week. I give ;) points for improvement.
Willa has shown her graceful and ladylike side. How beautiful! She and Maksim have been fun to watch. I think they were robbed!!! I don't care about their off stage love life. Will it be around in two weeks? Who cares- except their moms? Her early dances were weaker, but she has come a long way.
Can we talk costumes? I may sound like a prude, but the show is raking in enough $$ that they should be able to afford more than a yard of material per costume. Good thing those girls are thin!
Please let Jerry go home.
I think we should be saying goodbye in this order:
Jerry, Sara, Monique, Emmitt, Joey and Dimples- I mean Mario. That Dimple is always there- Do you think it was surgically placed? Can I have one?

I love this show! I just wish the judges would stop priasing the dancers and then give them low scores. That drives me nuts! If they're good, give them a 9 or 10; if they're not that great, give them a 7 or 8 but don't tell them they're fantastic and then give them a 7! I love the chemistry between some couples - why not? As long as they're not married to others, let them "play" and then dance!

I don't know who is making all those unfavorable comments about Sara Evans, but obviously he is not in tune with America'a roots. She is a fine country singer. I think he should shut his fat vile mouth and let the voters make up their own minds. Hey, I'm nobody, and a lot of those people I don't know, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to say ugly, demeaning things about them. I'm a Cajun from Louisiana, a great grandmother, and we as a whole, are fun loving, as we have that joie de vivre-which means joy of life, most of us love to dance, not professionally, but for the fun of it! YOU however , should go back into that hole you crawled out of- I know, don't end a sentense with a preposition, but that don't make me blind, stupid, insesitive, or incapable of thinking for myself!

Fan support is a funny thing. For instance, I have no idea who Sara Evans is. I don't find her particularly pretty, nor a good singer or dancer. So I could care less when she leaves. Willa, though I've never heard of her either, I at least think is a good dancer and was surprised by her low results in the first weeks.

I would have said a few weeks ago that there's nothing Jerry can do that John O'Hurley and George Hamilton didn't alreayd do, but then he brought out the "waltz for my daughter's wedding" thing. Which worked, obviously. But unless he can bring out something like "The foxtrot is what my wife and I danced to at our own wedding, god rest her soul, and I'd like to do it one more time in her memory" then I think it's time for him to go. (And no, of course I have no idea of whether Jerry even has a wife, let alone if she's alive or not.)

I say Mario wins, and I bet Willa manages to hang on until second because of the whole "real couple off camera" thing that's starting to get shoved down our throats. Joey will be too mechanical to compete with the couples that have real chemistry and he'll fall to third.

By the way, I like Robert's analysis -- the judges score high, yet consistently, thus leaving it in the hands of the audience to choose. Last night nobody got less than an 8. The downside to that is that if anybody sees a 7 or a 6 in coming weeks there's going to be a riot.

They've got to grade on a curve. Some couples will just never get as good as some of the other couples. It looks like if the couples are working hard the judges will leave it in the hands of the audience. Example: Master P last season, they knew he wasn't working hard at all and they didn't want the fans to even give him a chance of moving on so they gave him like a 12 or something of that effect. The reason they criticize the better couples is that they want to see the good ones be perfect, and they know that Jerry ain't gonna get any better than where he's at now.

By the way, my votes all go towards Jerry.

I do agree with you that Sara is not the best dancer, but I also think this is more than a dancing contest-- so much of the celebrity's life off the stage comes into play. I guess you could call me a Sara fan, but I have enjoyed voting for her week to week and have enjoyed watching her progress from week to week.

I just love the show. It is so refreshing. I give them all an A for trying. They are refreshing to watch. Something besides sex swearing and violence for a change. I have my favorites. I wish I could get up there and dance. Unfortunatly my husband dances like Tucker. I say just sit back relax and enjoy. There is too much sadness going on out in the world today. I think the shows great. I also don't think anyone should be critized for trying this. Kudos to all of them.

Is it just me or does Emmit do the same dance every week. Those foot and hand movements are exactly the same as week one or two (can't recall).
