Jericho: Walls of Jericho

Jericho

(S01E04)
Is the bar in Jericho asking patrons to pay money for the food and drink they're consuming during this crisis? I ask that because in the opening scene of tonight's episode, the power goes out and the woman behind the bar tells everyone to go home. And I'm thinking, wait a second...the world might be coming to the end and the only comfort these small town citizens can find is with each other, and the bar is making them go home at 9:30? Shouldn't this bar be sort of a meeting place, since it has food and drink and a television?

Jake finds a sick man in the alley. He can hardly speak and he's suffering from radiation poisoning. They rush him to the hospital. Jake wants to treat him, while his brother wants to save the medicine and just give him painkillers to make him comfortable.

While the power goes out and the townspeople search for gas, one of the cops finally addresses the problem of defense. They don't know what caused these bomb blasts, and what if someone attacks Jericho. This scenario is made even more possible by the mysterious words the stranger mumbles before he passes out: "they're coming."

Meanwhile, hottie girl is having a party and invites Hawkins' daughter (well, only because she was going to buy the last bag of chips). The cops break up the party because it's draining too much power. Hawkins isn't happy that she went to the party, because it endangered the family.

The stranger, named Victor, wakes up and tells Jake that something happened on the lake. Meanwhile, others find Shep's truck, empty...but with the stranger's wallet and ID in it. Hmmm...

Jake and volunteers go out to get 20 others from Denver that Victor said were with him. The group finds them, all dead. The town holds a service for them.

I still like this show, and this was a good episode, but it raised more nagging questions than answers. Such as, why are these people acting like it's just another day, going to the store, having parties? Wouldn't you be freaking out and want to get to the next town anyway you can, even if "someone" might be out there? How did the kid get all that food from the train to the store? Why is the woman guarding the gas in her tank? Where the hell does she plan on going?

I do like this show though, especially the plot with Hawkins. The whole scene tonight with him going over the story his family tells everyone, that's pretty intriguing. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? He seems good, because he's actually been helping the town, but he also seems to be holding something back. Does he work for the government?

The mystery only deepens when Hawkins gives the man medicine to question him. As Jake runs for morphine, Hawkins confronts the man, who knows him. He asks him why he went back to Denver. He chastizes him because "it was only supposed to be families." Victor tells him that there's a traitor in their group, whoever "their group" might be. Hawkins sends someone an e-mail to tell them they have a traitor.

Cool. That's more intriguing than the Lost season opener.

I hope the show continues and we get to find out who we fired the minuteman missles at!! What did hawkins mean our targets or theirs? A foriegn power perhaps. If it is an internal terrorist group how did they manage the high altitude H bomb attack?

1) RE: Earlier question about news broadcast -- Chinese-language news (along with shows in many other languages) regularly appears on certain Canadian TV channels. I live near the border and can easily pick them up with rabbit-ear antenna from Vancouver area. 2) Really enjoy show concept but TOO many visible flaws. They are like nails on a chalkboard. Writers are sloppy. Producers seem to be doing it on-the-cheap in the VanNuyes back-lot.
Wouldn't it have been easier for Victor to write than talk?
What happened to folks Jake ran into? Dead? Injured?
How come town of 5000 has only one gas station? One grocery store? Compare that population to cities in your state. Bet they all have more, especially if also serve area's rural population.
How come they still have water? How big is the storage tank? I'm assuming no generator started to run a pump to refill it, much less run any sewage treatment system.
Isn't anyone (except doctor who left to look for his daughter) going nuts with concern over out-of-town relatives? Nobody have a helpless grannie in Detroit? A soldier son in Germany? A sister who probably died in Denver? Residents don't seems concerned, much less mourning a loss.
If the mayor has the flu, how come he just has an occasional cough? And why hasn't anyone else come down with it in those tight quarters?
I'm curious how they will stage a Kansas winter ... especially since most homes don't have wood stoves.
And will they try -- even a little bit -- to have their female actors NOT be blow-dried and perfectly made-up when there is no electricity, no hot showers and limited restocking of beauty products. Lets see some of those teens with acne and greasy locks as the show progresses!

It's all vauge for a reason and that is to keep the plot rolling. Directors learned that they have to keep the plot vauge so that if and when it becomes a hit that they don't end up extending it to something ridiculous like alias.

As for the way the towns people are acting 4 days after the attack. The people buying pointless things are the kids who are suposedly in a state of denial. That's what kids do. Plus, let's face it, this is a TV show. They couldn't sell a bunch of people running around in a panic who are scarfing down panic medications constantly. It's Hollywood. Expect their to be some cheesy parts.

Exactly.
A great idea so badly executed. I want the writing more bsg and less dawsons creek. thanks.

At least they seem to abandon those horrible popsongs they did put all over the place the last episodes.

to me, when victor told hawkins about the traitor, it seems that he said "you know who," like hawkins should be able to guess which one of his co-conspirators it is, even though we have no idea who that is.

dmc,
1. change the channel
2. tell McRaney to fire his agent, and then YOU find him better roles if you hate this one so much

This show is a great concept, exceptionally poor execution. Of course, I'm used to HBO-quality dramas like the Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, et. al, but broadcast shows like ER or Lost demonstrate what good writing and a good cast can do. Unfortunately, Jericho so far has demonstrated neither good writing nor good acting. After having watched Gerald McRaney on Deadwood, it's a travesty to see him going from playing such a rich, compelling character like Hearst to this cheesy small-town mayor. It's like going from Shakespeare to My Pet Goat. Awful.

I agree completely with adhonus' theory. Keep in mind the time frame--it's only been 4 days since the explosions, people are in shock, denial, whatever. Could it be that it's the 'partying kids' parents who are hanging out at the bar, pretending life is NOT ending as they know it? The people in this town are all dealing with this in their own way, and they have such little information to go on.

Lennie James (Hawkins) and Skeet Ulrich (Jake) are carrying the show right now-and incredibly well, considering we aren't privy to their background stories. It's going to take time to establish deeper relationships with all of the characters we've been introduced to, but I'm hooked. I can overlook some of the lesser, weaker plots and let this show build on it's strengths. Can't wait till next week!

Additionally:

When Victor told Hawkins there was a traitor and that Hawkins knew him, this doesn't necessarily mean this person is someone we've already seen on the show. (I'm thinking it's not.) It could be someone that Hawkins knew before he arrived to Jericho.

I think Victor's message to Hawkins about this traitor implies that this person knows Hawkins has the nuclear container. Victor was warning Hawkins that they're coming for it now.
