Update: Syndicated NewsRadio includes an extra penis

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 13th 2006 3:40PM

NewsRadioActually, make that two.

Several months ago, I pointed out that the DVD version of the NewsRadio episode "The Injury" (the one where Matthew hurts his hand) is the edited version. In the subplot where Bill is doing on-air commentaries about broadcasters using the word "penis," Dave confronts Bill, and besides Dave saying the phrase "per penis" (referring to how much money Bill be have to pay as a fine), Bill calls Dave a penis under his breath. Both of these mentions of the word penis are not in the version on the DVD.

But I was watching the episode on TBS today (stations are starting to air NewsRadio again, including TBS and Nick at Nite) and it aired unedited! All the penises were intact (so to speak). I'm now wondering why the version shown on television has all mentions of a naughty word but the DVD version is edited? I understand that the episode wasn't shown until the third season (even though it was filmed in the second season) because of all of the penis mentions, but why is the original version intact on TV but censored on the DVD?

And I'm still wondering why the swears on the NewsRadio DVD commentaries are bleeped out. Seems odd to me.

Both of my DVD sets that have the "The Injury" include the edited versions and I bought mine at Amazon and direct from Sony, via Columbia House, so I don't know what explains any of the descrepencies. My only thought is that whatever master Sony was using from the DVD was a different master than what was sent out for syndication (because I remember seeing both "penis" mentions in local syndication, but I don't recall if the A&E/Biography kept it intact) -- I can't think it was an intentional exclusion (especially considering they bothered to put the episode on both the season 1&2 and 3 box sets just for completionary value). I think some of the commentary cursing (as well as certain name-drops that could be slanderous) on the DVD was either bleeped by an over-eager censor or was done so the set could attain a PG rating or whatever in foreign countries that have different language rules (like the UK) than the US. That way they could just adjust the region/format to release the DVD in other markets.

It'll be interesting to see if Nick-at-Nite's "The Injury" is edited or unedited (I think it airs next week). I tuned in specifically to see what version TBS would air -- I'm glad it was the penis-friendly version, so to speak.

Dave: It's not *me* characterizing the word as "naughty," it's the studio who deleted it from the DVD version. That was the reason it was edited, too many mentions of the word in the episode.

I'm going to double check both versions on both sets and see if one of them is unedited.

Interesting -- add that to my two confusions about the DVDs: first, "The Injury" is listed on both season 1 and 2. Second, why does this DVD set have Portuguese subtitles??

"I'm now wondering why the version shown on television has all mentions of a naughty word but the DVD version is edited?"

Since when is penis a "naughty" word? Oh yea, since never.

Michael, Bob swears that the episode on both the DVD sets does not have it.

My DVD set does.

I thought this episode was on two DVD sets...

And I could swear on one of them, it's the unedited version.
