Ugly Betty gets a full season on ABC

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 14th 2006 11:09AM
ugly bettyABC has given a full season order to Ugly Betty, the highest-rated new show on television so far this fall. And it's about time. The comedy has consistently been a close second to CBS' Survivor during the 8 pm time slot on Thursday nights, averaging 15.3 million viewers.

Last year, ABC had all sorts of stuff including Alias, Dancing with the Stars, and American Inventor in the 8 pm time slot and they averaged only 7 million viewers for the season. The press release announcing the pick-up of Ugly Betty says the show has increased ratings in that time period by 92% in key demographics.

I'm from Colombia and the Original Betty gave you the guts you lost when you try to be someone you don't fit with and teach you that despite of beauty, intelligence always is a tourning point in any company.I proved it my self in my life, by the way, I'm not ugly but not blond, and blond in Latin America means success!!!!!

OK i've no degree on racial profiling and obviously Betty's character seems to have a mixture of three main racial attributes [that is] Caucasoid [her skin] Negroid [can you tell her nose & luscious lips? ] and mongoloid [that is] Indian cheek bones and eyes, her well approved personality and natural looks it's what makes Betty a good candidate for the show in a general sense it clearly fit to most latin american viewers and pop culture thru the American eyes.

Dancing with the stars did the same amount is doing now in that time slot -- it showed ABC that they could do competitive in the time slot.

Shannon, I completely disagree. The fact that Betty is latin has nothing to do with her looks - the show is originally latin (Columbian) and the producers wanted to create a show that will talk to the original latin audience as well as the all amerixcan one that did not watch the original. You can say many things for and against the show and it's use of stereotypes - but racism is definetly not one of them.

I watched the first two episodes, and that show is complete rubbish (as are most new shows this season). What a waste of airtime to give that show a full order (same is true of Jericho, an equal waste of space).

I am so glad to read this news. "Ugly Betty" is one of the better new shows this season and each episode (of the three so far) has been better than the one before.

When I told a friend that I thought it should do well with Hispanic viewers, she scoffed because it is remake of a telenovella. I'd be very interested to find out how well it is doing with this demographic.

Oh,

And not to mention that Betty does not look "white", is she? I'm not sure but she looks to be of another nationality or something.

Guess what I'm trying to say is that they make it sound like "ugly"
people are more believable if they are of another race with braces and "good looking" people are more believable if they are "white".

That disturbs me.

Probably that it is suggested that "ugly people" are always good natured and "good looking" people are usually always jerks or (excuse the language here)..b!@ch's.

As I said.

It's probably me but I just get tired of looks being such a big factor in today's world when we need to get away with that type of stereotype. But considering where this show originated from I can see why this type of show puts emphesis on "looks". I just think it's sends a warped message to society, but it's not (and probably won't be the last) show to do this.

I condemn myself here I guess because Three's Company is one of my favorite classic sitcoms and THAT show was ALL about "looks" and sexual overtones.

I'll shut up now. lol

I imagine the series finale will have Betty lose the braces and get contacts and wind up out-glamorizing the glamourous.

Of course... that is another seven seasons away... we hope.
