Project Runway: Finale (Part II)

by Annie Wu, posted Oct 19th 2006 7:34AM
Project Runway(S03E14) After minimal drama (drama that totally didn't live up to the previews), Jeffrey's outsourcing scandal was over and he was let off the hook. However, he was slightly over-budget, so he had to cut the blonde wigs out of his collection. I honestly thought the wigs would have negatively impacted his presentation, so it was probably lucky for him that he had to take away a couple hundred from his budget.

The guest judge was Fern Mallis, creator of Olympus Fashion Week and, ironically enough, probably the worst-dressed person of the episode.

And, if you're interested... A few weeks ago, I saw pictures from Fashion Week and shared my initial thoughts about each of the collections here.

Michael: Despite being the obvious crowd-favorite, his presentation failed to step up. It was unfortunately trashy and over-the-top. I saw that he did a lot of mixed-pattern work that was reminiscent of Uli's other stuff... He didn't pull it off, I'm sorry to say. Again, Michael was my season-favorite, so I was extremely sad to see him go in this direction. The judges said good-bye to him first, saying that he still needed time to mature. Even though I'm disappointed, I'm not worried about Michael... He has great talent and a fantastic attitude.

Laura: Hands-down, the detailing was stunning and everything looked much more expensive than $8000. However, it looked a lot more plain than I recalled from the photos... And her final piece was actually kind of unattractive. Anyway, the construction was amazing, as always, but it wasn't enough to give her the win.

Uli: I stuck by my initial thoughts about her collection. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. And Nazri looked hot, of course. That woman makes everything look good. The only thing I didn't like -- and I'm really nit-picking here -- was the background music. Disney, much? I think Uli should have pulled a Santino and mixed her own club jam. Despite getting rave responses from all of the judges, she only came in second (because her story was disjointed? Whatever). I honestly thought she was going to win. Damn. I guess it was yet another example of reality show editing leading the viewers on. It hurts, don't it?

Jeffrey: [WINNER OF SEASON THREE] His collection looked much better in motion than it did in the photographs (the close-up shots showed some lovely zipper detailing). However, I still thought it was tremendously weak (I actually thought his was the decoy collection). Unflattering, unattractive, and highly unusual... but not in a good way. And yet... he won. And I exploded. And I waved my arms around. And I shouted a lot. And my apartmentmate bled from the ears. And I attempted to apologize for permanently ruining her hearing, but I was suddenly overcome with the need to continue my incoherent yelling. Furious, I am.

This season has probably been the most unenjoyable out of the three. The first season was painful but captivating, the second season was hilarious and engaging. The third season was created for the sole purpose of doing numbers on my blood pressure. I don't know if my heart is going to be able to handle another season, but... damn it... Project Runway, you always have me coming back for more.

Fashion/Runway show are about what is up and coming. I LOVED Uli's colection, but will I next year? With the exception of Jeffery, everyone made "NOW IN STYLE" type clothing. The judges are looking for the NEXT trend, which Jeffery attempted to give them, time will tell.

My preference for winners would have been: #1 - Uli, #2 - Laura, #3 - Jeffrey and #4 - Michael. Michael really let me down, what happened?

Did anyone else find it a little insincere that Laura moaned about not having the money to start her own design business? Please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't apartments/condos like the one Laura lives in an arm and a leg in NY? She obviously knows what the well off in NY wear to cocktail parties, so I am just guessing she belongs in those circles and has a little cash to spare.

I saw a glimpse of the canned designers in the crowd. I hope for the sake of the people sitting next to Vincent that he wasn't doing a Paul Reubens as he enjoyed the fashions down the runway! He will forever be Mr. Creepy in my book.

I want to know why the designer who produces the most wearable clothes doesn't win. Isn;t that the point? To make money and sell clothes? If it were an art project I'd understand the need for excessive innovativeness, but there wasn't one outfit of Jeffrey's that I would ever buy, even if it was priced cheaply...however, Uli's and Laura's clothes are clothes I'd shell out big bucks for. It just makes no sense that the judges tell Uli that her collection is the most loved by women and that they will want her clothes more... but then they pick Jeffrey? Jeffrey who not only had debately ethics, was definitely an asshat, and designed clothes that less than 1 percent of the poulation would find wearable.

What is the deal people! LOL!

I re-watched last night and I have to say that Uli's collection was the only one that I would consistently purchase and wear, followed by Laura (though not quite as consistently). There was nothing in Michael's or Jeffrey's collectin that I would wear much less pay money for. This has not been the case for Michael's designs over the season but it has been the case for Jeffrey's designs.

Susan J - I agree about Michael Kor's designs. I can not think of a single item of his that I have seen in the local Macy's that I would even consider buying (even during a 75% off sale!)

When will "Project Runway" and/or Bravo start filming in HD? This show would be so much more enjoyable in HD as every little detail (buttons, sequins etc.) would be noticable.

Also Bravo does not have Closed Captioned on any show. I love Bravo shows , but do they not know that they are ancient behind all other networks that do have HD and CC on almost all their shows!

I agree with the masses, Uli had the best collection, but she will do better being on her own. Also, Uli's house was to die for, that girl has taste!

The collections were wonderful, I was Really really really really really rooting for Uli but unfortunately ( or fortunate??? )she came a bit short on the stack although, i love her very Gracious character and acceptance of being second, I think it's a character that most people should spire especially of those "over the top posters".

We could whine and whine.., and Whine some more all day but that wouldn't change the verdict ANYMORE...
Best thing we could do is patronize Uli's designs although I must say I will definitely consider buying some Jeff's Mens Fall collection...

...Now you could start slinging the Poop but this is JMO!!!

I don't know if Jeffrey had help or not - but to be fair, I imagine it would be easier to sew at home and get a lot more done than be under the constraints of each episode. I still don't like his stuff, but that's a matter of personal taste. Go Uli!!! I imagine all four have a future - wasn't the fashion head for Walmart asking about one of them? Was it Michael or Uli? That's got to be good gig. You also need to remember the line in the sign-off credits about the producers having input with the judging. Hello??? You know they want to keep people watching by stirring the mix and don't care about the fashion/taste aspects at all. Also, have you seen some of Michael Kors' designs - some are simply hideous (the "let's make women look bizarre" school). I know people who can design and produce a lot more in the two months than the gang of four on Runway. Heck, I used to do more myself. You can get mightly focused and efficient when your income depends on it.

Uli was totally robbed, but I can see why Jeffrey won. Still Uli (like throughout most of the season) was robbed of the win.

not for nothing, but the whole season finale felt like a sham. i agree with annie wu's views (with the exception of coming back for more) and if my neighbor did not have a newborn, i would have been screaming at the highest decibels, too. since when are the terms/statements "saleable", "wearable", "i'd purchase every one of those pieces" NOT complimentary and directional?? clearly, the "expert" judges were smoking something during their final deliberations, otherwise uli would have taken home the title. (loved ya michael but your line was on the garish, ho-stroll tip.)
